Boy Scouts sex files now evidence in Oregon lawsuit
Deseret News ^ | March 20, 2010 | William McCall

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Boy Scouts of America call them "perversion files," internal documents used to track Scout leaders suspected of sexually abuse young boys. On Friday they became part of the public record in an Oregon lawsuit.

A judge who had ordered the Scouts to release them received 1,247 files into evidence near the end of the third day of trial...

Attorneys...won the release of files from 1965-85 to help them make the case in a $14 million lawsuit against the Boy Scouts filed by a 37-year-old Oregon man. He was sexually molested in the early 1980s by assistant Scoutmaster Timur Dykes, who was convicted three times between 1983 and 1994 of sexually abusing boys, most of them Scouts.

SNIP

Earlier Friday, testimony from a bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints responsible for a Scout troop of church members suggested the Scouts never provided leaders with training about spotting abuse or preventing it.

In a video deposition, Gordon McEwen said he tended mostly to his church duties...He was also vague about his recollections of conversations with Scoutmaster Earl Wiest about Dykes. McEwen said he stepped up his involvement when the mother of a scout complained in January 1983 her son may have been abused. McEwen said he confronted Dykes, who admitted abusing 17 boys and provided a written list of names.

But a retired police officer who investigated the abuse report testified Friday that McEwen never told police about the list.

McEwen admitted he never turned over the list to police. But he said he personally contacted the parents of all 17 boys on the list before calling a state meeting of the church to "disfellowship" Dykes, or limit his church involvement, and counseled him to "repent of his errors..."

From the article: McEwen never told police about the list...McEwen admitted he never turned over the list to police. But he said he personally contacted the parents of all 17 boys on the list...

So here's this Lds bishop; and he has a list of 17 sexual abuse victims within the Scouts supplied by the perpetrator, an assistant scoutmaster, and he never supplies the list to law enforcement???

From the article: ...calling a state meeting of the church to "disfellowship" Dykes, or limit his church involvement, and counseled him to "repent of his errors..."

Say what? He "counseled him to 'repent of his errors...'"???
"Errors"???
17 abuse victims???
Some probably abused multiple times.
And he called what this pedophile perp did "errors???"

Had they gone to police, The Boy Scouts would have been indicted for ‘hate crimes’ toward gays.

What is interesting is that this information going public proves that the Boy Scouts had good reason to be concerned, and that the representatives in our government should have been on their side.

However, it is likely they will be punished for even trying to protect underage males from predators.

To see the Boy Scouts ‘die’, is to see America ‘die’.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Churches DO need to take their own action against members who behave in such a manner, in addition to contacting civil authorities.

This guy who withheld the list from the authorities needs to face charges of his own for obstruction of justice or SOMETHING.

Sorry. Won't fly, especially given the "age" of this case.

Even if you could somehow make a case for such an indictment, which, BTW, I don't, the guy filing the lawsuit vs. the Boy Scouts & Lds Church in this case was abused in the early 1980s. And the guy accused apparently did the abusing between 1983-1994.

As much power as homosexuals have now, they didn't have that much in this time frame.

Although I was a boy scout when I was a kid, my four boys are so busy with sports that boy scouts never was even brought up. I wonder how much boy scouts is even part of Americana anymore. I wonder what the stats are today.

.
Correct. The gays were suing the BSA for not permitting homosexual scoutmasters. But anyone with even a modicum of sense could see the reason for keeping them as far as possible from boys.

No doubt this happened, and it is horrible.

Here’s the underlying pattern, though, as pioneered by Alinksy. Always use your enemy’s values against them. Conservative institutions like the Catholic church and the Boy Scouts are competing with the left for the minds and hearts of the young. Therefore, move against them by making the crimes of a few seem like the norm of the institution. Both the Catholics and the Boy Scouts have a core value called “integrity,” and once a crime has been exposed in the organization, they’ll generally face up to it - and then it’ll be used against them. Any hestitation will be called a “cover-up.” It’s a brilliant strategy, in an evil way.

I’m already running into people who believe that every priest buggers children. The same pattern will happen with the Boy Scouts - although, amusingly enough, the Boy Scouts were smeared more than two decades ago as being homophobic for NOT allowing gay scout leaders into their organization. Now they’re going to be smeared for ALLOWING those same gay scout leaders who are out trolling for teenage boys.

I would bet that there is also a pattern of sexual abuse in the Girl Scouts, too. However, the Girl Scouts now have an established pedigree of leftist, feminist teachings, and they’ll be left alone. There will be no investigation of lesbian-girl affairs.

I would also bet there’s a pattern of sexual abuse on all those communes established in the 1960s, too - after all, free love was mentioned often, and child sex abuse includes adult-teen sex. Again, they’re leftists. No investigation.

My prediction - next victim, the Latter-Day Saints. You know, strange conservatives with bizarre beliefs. And they’ll own up to it, too, and it’ll be used against them.

Doubtful. The BSA is a large part of Mormonism, most congregations (wards) have their own troops or hold the troop meetings and a large part of BSA in Ut, ID, NV, CA are LDS run or involved.

They don’t have the involvement with the girl scouts the same way.

I’m already running into people who believe that every priest buggers children.

Some even point to celibacy as the reason (which makes no sense, why would a homosexual pedophile be less inclined if they could marry a woman?).

The attack is going on all fronts, and the reasons are obvious.

Gays have a huge amount to gain by tearing down any institution which opposes their agenda. Despite incidents, both the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts have been institutions which have no real place for homosexuality.

Add in the opposition to Federal 'health care' (a big winner for AIDS' highest risk group) on the basis of abortion, and the refusal to even consider "gay marriage" and the Catholic Church becomes a two-fer for attack.

All this while other churches ordain openly gay bishops and mumble about 'gay marriage'.

Anyone who cannot see the ultimate source of the attack isn't looking.

“Gays have sex with boys, so you must not restrict gays’ access to boys.” Do I have the reasoning correct?

Therefore, move against them by making the crimes of a few seem like the norm of the institution.

Except in this case it wasn't simply the "crimes" that is on trial; both the Boy Scouts and the Lds church is being sued by a victim. It was the cover-up of these crimes by the Lds church that is why the Lds church is being sued.

The Lds bishop did not turn over to law enforcement officials the 17-name victim list once he began his own investigation & secured that list from the perp.

I was listening Tuesday night to a radio report in which a Catholic was being interviewed about recent allegations of child abuse by a Roman Catholic vicar and another employee in Germany from the 1960s. The man interviewed said in these types of cases, there's always two stories: The alleged crimes themselves and then the question of a cover-up.

Your simplistic Alinsky boogie man approach doesn't even pretend to address the cover-up dimension involved in these kinds of cases.

Yeah, gay folks, thanks for trying to destroy the boy scouts. They’ve managed to do so here, by making it so that the girls could join. As soon as they did that, the whole organisation has basically folded up shop.

That’s the idea. It’s a happy hunting ground for them and they want a hunting permit. But is we forbid them and some slip through to prey on and abuse the boys it’s our fault for not catching them.
