Mail delivery must be cut from six days a week to five for the U.S. Postal Service to survive, Postmaster General John Potter says.
Mounting labor costs, massive debt, and growing competition from e-mail will make it necessary to make the move by the end of the month, Potter told a gathering of officials in Washington, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Three or four would be nice.
Well, we all know what the problem is, but I will use a real-life situation:
Just this morning, I see the postman delivering to my business as usual (from his standard-issue van), then I see a white USPS minivan stopping about 50 yds. behind him.
I asked the delivery guy: ‘what, now you have management watching you?’
He says: ‘Yes, it has been that way for a very long time, they watch us all day.’
‘Nuf said!
Heck, I can barely remember when the mailman delivered mail TWICE in one day! But I can live without Saturday delivery.
Or I could log into gmail and send mail at a fraction of those cost in seconds rather than days. And if I need to send a package I can send it by fedex. Why do we have a postal system in this country? If people want to send mail the old fashioned way I’m sure someone can start a company to do it after the postal system goes kaput.
Remember, every forth tuesday is MAIL day!
Bring out yer MAIL!, Bring out yer MAIL!
Remember, every forth wednesday is Mail DELIVERY day!
I thought Tuesdays wer Soylent Green days?
The percentage would probably be higher for cutting Wednesday and keeping Saturday as a delivery day. That is if they don't load the poll up with mail delivers.
I check my mail once a week primarily for my Netflix DVD....everything else is online.
Because it's one of the few things that the gov't is mandated to do in the Constitution.
Why not?
If FEDEX or UPS had to stop at every house every day, trust me, the cost would be a hell of a lot higher.
Personally, as an ebay seller, the USPS beats the other 2 for packages under 10 lbs.

I went to college in a small town that had no mail delivery, everyone picked their mail up at the post office. If you didn’t have a P.O. box you just had it sent to “General Delivery” and you asked for your mail at the counter. No one seemed to complain about it.
And who, besides U.S. Postal Service workers, needs the U.S. Postal Service to survive?
My ex and I used to own a business. As I went about my daily business while running errands, I used to notice that there was a special place that postal trucks parked and the inhabitants took naps.
Why is this?
not to mention the fact that the amount of mail people receive including adverts is going to continue declining over the long term. Hell advertisements are about all I get besides Christmas/birthday cards. All of my billing and major correspondence is conducted online where that wasn’t an option for most people even ten years ago.
Yes, back we go, slowly, slowly backwards we go in time.
Totally agree....
And I've shipped thousands of items....via the USPS.
When I go into the post office - no hamblamos english. No speaky english senor.
