Obama silent ahead of vote on Armenian genocide

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is in a bind as a House committee prepares to vote on a resolution that would recognize the World War I-era killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

While a White House candidate, then-Sen. Obama said he believed the killings were genocide. A congressional resolution to that effect could alienate Turkey, a NATO ally and traditional friend of the United States that is crucial to America's foreign policy goals.

Past administrations have defeated similar resolutions through public cajoling about national security interests and with behind-the-scenes lobbying.

If you think he finds all the bothersome noise about the Armenians annoying, don’t even get him started on all those Chinese and Soviet Russia rumours...

A Wacki synopsis:
The Ottoman Turks were the subdivision of the Ottoman MUSLIM MILLIT that dominated the ruling class of the Ottoman Empire. Reliable information about the early history of the Ottomans is scarce. According to some sources (references needed), the leader (khan) of the Kayi tribe of the Oguz Turks, Ertugrul, left Persia in the mid-thirteenth century to escape the invading Mongols. He took service with the sultan of Rum and was permitted to invade and conquer lands in Bithynia, adjacent to the Byzantine territories of Nicomedia (Izmit), Nicaea, and Bursa. He was successful in this quest, founding an amirate which rapidly grew in military strength because the lure of Byzantine booty attracted mercenary gazis from neighboring amirates. His son and successor, Osman I (reigned ca. 1299-1326), became the eponymous founder of the Osmanli (later corrupted by Europeans into “Ottoman”) dynasty, which ruled the Ottoman empire during most of its 620 year rise and history.

Explains Zeros silence.

They describe the Armenians as a disease that needed to be wiped out. NO doubt they were (are) genocidal maniacs.

Muslims killing Christians. Thats why he’s silent. This goes back all the way to the original muslim conquests. When Christianity fought back (the crusades) the Armenians were allied with crusader states. They were eventually conquered by the muslims. When Christian Russia incorporated parts of Armenia into its territory, the Turks (Russia’s enemy in WW1) started killing the remaining Armenians in their midst. Nothing but a continuation of the Muslim/Christian wars that have been going on for over a thousand years.

Every now & then when they're not blabbering on about love & equality the leftists scolds afford us a peek at how their minds really work.

Very revealing and a warning to the rest of us.

I for one am very glad to see the House busying itself with concerns of the early last century. They should act quickly on this matter as the centro-genarians they are condemning may not be around much longer.

Individually we can agree or not (yes I said not -- it's called free speech. We're in America.)

But as for dragging our government into this -- again! -- well our government has passed resolutions in the past.

And there is an issue behind the issue.

Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey is a secondary issue – interview with Harut Sassounian

"The only problem is that the Turkish side is fighting the resolution, claiming that it is the first resolution of this kind. If the Turkish side did not fight it, I would not care about whether the resolution would be adopted or not. However, since the Turkish side is waging a political struggle, and the resolution has been submitted, we cannot retreat. Otherwise, it will be viewed as the Armenian side’s defeat. The real purpose of the resolution is not recognition of the Armenian Genocide, but a political struggle – the issue of which side has a larger political capital in Washington."

"Which side has a larger political capital in Washington!"

Don't we have enough problems! Go home and fight about it, please! What's wrong with that? Anyone?

"[T]he admission of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey is an issue of secondary importance for us. . . . our lands were seized and our 3,000-year-old culture was destroyed. . . . Therefore, our true demand is compensation for this injustice. . . . The Turkish side is well aware that the step to follow the admission of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey will be a demand for compensation and return of the lands. . . .[Turkey wants us to] keep demanding the admission of the Genocide for hundreds of years [to avoid] the next step. . . . Our demands do not depend on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide before going on to the next steps. . . . [T]he Armenian people have [rights] under international law . . . Now specialists must study the lawyers’ advice and decide which issue should be submitted to which court, as there is the International Court of Justice, European Court of Human Rights, US Federal Courts, etc. This is a most important issue. It must be studied with all seriousness, because, if we lose in court, Turkey will claim that Armenians have no legal demands."

"Our demands do not depend on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide before going on to the next steps"

Then do it! Good luck. Leave us out of this -- we're kinda busy right now. What's wrong with that? Anyone?

My opinion about "our 3,000-year-old culture was destroyed" don't you think that submitting to the U.S.S.R. to become a "republic" for 70 years had a destructive effect also? Sue Putin.

.. also

"[our] demand for . . . return of the lands"

Won't Armenia have to get in line with the Kurds? They claim eastern Turkey also, I believe.

Very good. Though I can’t say I’m looking forward to young Armenian men in their Mercedes and BMWs hanging out in in public parking lots all day or standing in the middle of streets blocking traffic, or their cars draped in Armenian flags racing up and down major thoroughfares for hours....

No worries. They can always condemn their great grandchildren, just like they do here.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w/

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

The Kurds condemn genocide

In the past the Marxist PKK joined the Kurdish Parliament in Exile to condemn the genocide (neither is associated with the government of the Kurdish region of Iraq, the exiles/PKK wanted eastern Turkey and more)

.. yet how about this

500,000 Armenians Said To Have Perished. Washington Asked to Stop Slaughter of Christians by Turks and Kurds. The New York Times September 24, 1915

Turks and Kurds. Go figure.

Ottoman ally Kaiser Wilhelm II knew of the plight of the Armenian residents -- there were German military stationed in Ottoman Turkey -- and Germany did nothing. Some individuals may have tried but Wilhelm did nothing. Some have suggested Germany should answer also -- in fact some Germans stationed in Ottoman Turkey went on to serve Hitler.

Four points -

Everyone (I think it's accurate to say) is fully aware of the heinousness of genocide

Unless I am mistaken Congress and the administration at the time have both issued condemnations of the actions of the Ottoman Turks against the Armenian people.

It's 2010 and we have immediate genocide-like threats to the U.S. and the Western World -- it's been more than 50 years since I had basic training in the Army and it was there (even in basic) that they taught to scan for the closest (immediate) threats first. Please see note.

Regardless of threats and busyness, I am a citizen of the U.S. I have influence (Ha!) on one representative and two senators; foreigners have influence on 435 representatives and 100 senators -- I'm sick of it! and that goes for Mexico; India; Israel; the PLO, et al; China . . . .

Note:
Like it or not.. our NATO ally modern secular Turkey is extremely important for a number of reasons today just as in the past.

Turkey and Armenia are talking. Let them work it out. If you read my above long post you'll see that there appears to be a "genocide" contest among foreign interests to see which one can control/influence our Congress. I DO NOT like that. No American should like it. IMO.

IMO, we should be thinking about supporting the Turks in the street opposing the AKP's Islamist shenanigans, hundreds of thousands have recently protested against Islamism. That's right. There's a difference.
