Dems take a second look at GOP proposals, including tort reform
The Hill ^ | 2/27/10 | Alexander Bolton

There is a growing sense among Democratic lawmakers that an effort should be made to include GOP proposals in healthcare reform legislation in the wake of Thursday’s summit.

This has given an opening to centrist Democrats who want to take on trial lawyers by reforming medical malpractice law. These centrists say that Republican policy makers have made a strong case for lawsuit reform and it would be in the best interests of healthcare reform to meet them part-way.

IT WILL NEVER, EVER HAPPEN!

The biggest financial supporters of the Democrats is Lawyers. These are folks that have already taken an oath to violate Gods law every day for the rest of their lives. They are the REAL evil behind the Democrats.

And they are lying now.

It’s a clever move. The Rats put in some sort of token tort reform clause to appease the center, only to have the courts strike it down as unconstitutional. Got the T shirt. Yawn.

YEP!!!

There’a a better chance of the Titanic docking in NY than the Rats supporting tort reform.

Don’t forget the donk base. They are not going to sit quietly while their plaintiff bar buddies get even a teensy, bitsy shaft. Not to mention that for some folks, the prospect of a large malpractice suit is similar to winning Power Ball.

So, there will be no agreement among the donks as they contemplate losing large amounts of donations and large amounts of their base.

I suspect this issue will just get tossed to the states with some blather about “the laboratory”.

to meet them part-way

Yeah, sure. We've seen that before with McCain's various deals. 99% Democrat, and 1% Republican. They agree to limited tort reform (no hospital or doctor will be sued for more than $20 million) and the Republicans agree to a $3 trillion socialized healthcare plan that includes free abortions and Death Panels, plus unlimited benefits for union members.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of plan that the Stupid Party has often agreed to in the past.

Of course this is the big danger from Thursday. They don’t drop the existing bill, but they “add” several republican proposals. This gives cover to centrists, and maybe stupidly gets a republican vote, but if not, the centrists argue “we added their ideas, so it’s OK to pretend they support it”.

Then, the house passes a budget item defunding the tort reform, or whatever else was put in for the republicans, it is a budget item, and so comes through reconciliation, and wins easily.

This is why it was important for the republicans to say what was wrong with the democratic bill, and why Obama kept making that talk “off-limits”.

It will happen and here’s why. Dems will make an opening to the GOP to produce an amendment on reform, in return for support of the bill. When GOP refuses the Dems can paint Reps as obstructionists with no interest in reform, only in scoring political points. This will be drummed into public by MSM.Dem hope is to limit losses in Nov to historical norms. This will empower Obama et al to continue road to socialist America while marginalizing the GOP. That’s their hope and plan.

Correct. I for one am not interested in ANY so-called health care reform. My body belongs to me and the Maker who created me. Government has no right to control it.

The Dem's have had the drumbeat from the MSM for the last year and it hasn't changed public opinion. One thing about opinions, once they have become hardened, it takes quite a bit of reasoning to change them.
People I think have had enough preaching about health care and want something done concerning jobs.
This seems to me a move by centrist Dems that are getting cold feet this close to Nov.
