U.S. Sen. John McCain has picked up the endorsement of former actor and Sen. Fred Thompson while opponent J.D. Hayworth gets ready for an event with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and State Sen. Russell Pearce.
Hayworth and McCain, seeking a fifth term, are battling in the Republican Senate primary this year.
Thompson a former senator from Tennessee and actor on the Law & Order television show announced his endorsement Wednesday. McCain and Thompson both ran for president in 2008.
Im for John McCain. I hope he gets re-elected. Ill help him get re-elected if I can. Its more important for me, and I believe for the country, to have McCains leadership and the respect that he brings to bear on an issue. When he takes the floor on a national security matter. When he takes the floor and leads the intellectual effort the for the surge. When, without his efforts, I dont think we would have ever had a surge and therefore we would never have had a victory in Iraq, Thompson said.
Hayworth, Thomas and Pearce will appear together Feb. 24 in Tempe. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also backs Hayworth over long-time foe McCain.

From the audio: "Conservative friends I hope will take all of that into account before they nominate somebody or support somebody who probably doesn't have a chance in the general election anyway..."
Sill Tea Party dreams. /sarc
The GOP doesn't like what's happening and is determined to stop it. Hold on for a rough ride. Go J.D. and RINO opponents everywhere! Now...Where's my checkbook?
Just curious—what are Beck and O’Reilly doing?
Just sitting on the fence like they always do.
And now even Fred Thompson joins the throngs already tossed under the bus.
You guys sometimes are such a hoot.
Ah! Now I see - thanks for clarifying that! Using manipulation against voters. Are proud, Fred? It’s over now but the taint stays forever and that taint is against our country.
I still say Fred ran for president so the vote would be split in places like South Carolina to allow McCain to win that state and move on to win the nomination.
Good point. Big government Republicans have got to go! Also he is a Lawyer. This is going to be a long process weeding out the Collaborators.
Not Rush. Fred must of fooled him too. I am amazed so many here got fooled. I never liked him. Paul was the only candidate I liked and Tancredo. The old guard Republicans are all Big Government types. They just want to be in charge to get a bigger share of the Loot. Maybe some will figure it out after this.
And Crist here in Florida. He is now paying the price for giving us McCain. Although they had RINO Romney as the backup. That is why I was for Ron Paul.
Fred Thompson is a MAJOR disappointment, and his radio show sucks, too. Yeah, Jeri Thompson is BY FAR the better conservative half of that relationship!
There’s no doubt McCain has a lot of pull in the political classes, which is even more reason to send him packing! And, Sarah, c’mon. She’s “Going Rogue” by supporting the lead establishment RINO?!?
I’m no apologist for RINOs. Even though I really liked Fred Thompson AND Sarah Palin, I pretty much classify them as the enemy on this issue. McCain MUST be defeated!
Brimack34: “Fox News, Alot of talk radio are backing McLame why?”
Mark Levin has come out strong against McCain. Mark’s about as good as it gets for conservative radio, and his podcasts are FREE.
EV: “I warned everyone here about Fred Thompson a long time ago, and mainly all it got me was abuse.”
I apologize. You were right. Fred sucks. He’s just another stinking RINO siding with the centrists versus the grass roots conservatives. NO MORE FRED!
As far as I’m concerned, McCain is the conservative litmus test. Anyone who supports him deserves extra scrutiny, including Sarah Palin and Fred Thompson.
McCain epitomizes everything that’s wrong with Washington DC these days. His re-election would do SIX long years of damage to the conservative cause, and let me state clearly we’ve already had a Republican majority led by the likes of McCain. It wasn’t pretty, folks!
Disappointing, to put it mildly.
From the audio: “Conservative friends I hope will take all of that into account before they nominate somebody or support somebody who probably doesn’t have a chance in the general election anyway...”
Oh...my...gosh! Not more of this “electability” crap! NO ONE can predict the future. Based on the lame “electability” argument, NO ONE would have voted for Scott Brown, because he didn’t have a chance. He wasn’t “electable.”
The “vote for him because he’s electable” crowd are using that as a cover for their real agenda, and that agenda sure isn’t a return to conservative government!
I was disappointed in him too. I don’t watch Law and Order either. In fact I haven’t watched the little 3 for the most part in years.
I didn’t know that, or didn’t remember it. What a shame.
**You didnt?! Name one sitting politician who has endorsed Hayworth.**
That’s a PLUS in My Book!!
What interested ME was how everybody was talking like Hayworth was the 2nd coming of Reagan, and how Fred Thompson was wrong for not seeing that.
So my focus was on reasons why Fred Thompson might not be as willing to endorse Hayward as others here want him to be. And why Sarah Palin may not have been so willing to endorse Hayward as others here want her to be.
Obviously anything I say that makes Haywood look less than perfect would improve the comparison between Haywood and McCain. But I'm not going to let that stop me from responding to those who are attacking Thompson.
From your comment: You also made this ridiculous unsupportable statement I take it that you agree with me that Haywood isn't really Reagan. But that you don't think people here were treating him as if he had no flaws. But if that is ttue, why are you so upset that I pointed out the flaws that you seem to think everybody else is NOT ignoring?
Or do you actually think Haywood is the 2nd coming of Ronald Reagan? That's not how I read your comment, but maybe you do. In which case my attempt to convince you otherwise has provoked a predictable response.
