'Welcome to Obamaville' Sign At Homeless Tent City, Media Mum
NewsBusters ^ | December 12, 2009 | Noel Sheppard

A sign reading "Welcome to Obamaville Colorado's Fastest Growing Community" appeared at a homeless tent city in Colorado Springs this week.

You probably didn't hear about it because outside of two Colorado television stations nobody found this newsworthy.

By contrast, when word got out in March of a tent city in Sacramento, California, news media couldn't get enough of the story.

Is it because that happened so soon after Inauguration Day that it could easily be blamed on George W. Bush, and that given the name given to this area that's no longer possible?

I was just thinking yesterday that I haven’t seen those Joe Kennedy ads anymore touting free oil from Venezuela, and not seeing any news stories on the homeless.

Because you stop there, I’m sure you’ve seen it.

No. I haven't seen it. It's not visible from the freeway. That's where I've stopped. This is actually a longer area that runs along the river/creek and river walk. I'm guessing the sign is on the other side of the wooded area and across the water. I haven't had occassion to be on that side.

Well, IF the sign had not been made and displayed, literally Hundreds of Thousands of people would not know about it.

Well, there you go. I guess my thought is that they shouldn't need a politicized sign at all for a city full of Christians to notice and help -- especially in sub-zero weather. These tents are layed out along about a mile and everyone is obviously homeless. They've been there a year or so and no sign is needed to see them. That $150 could have helped someone more than the sign. I guess I was thinking more about the basic rules of humanity.

It would be great if you could check where this is supposed to be.

There is now supposed to be a sign asking for donations according to WND.

"That $150 could have helped someone more than the sign. I guess I was thinking more about the basic rules of humanity."

Assumptions abound, are you sure whomever made the sign did not also spend $150.00 dollars on food fuel or clothing for these people?

Further who gives the bigger gift... Those who give a bit of cash or food to help or those that not only give direct help but who spread the word in a unique way that brings attention from Hundreds of Thousands?

Think it through and you will eventually get there.

The homeless people or the sign? The homeless people are located about a quarter mile past the Limon exit, to the east of I-25, and about three-quarters of a mile north to the next off-ramp. To the west of that point is where the clinic is located (I haven't had to stop at the vet clinic for a few months because my route changed so I forget the name of the street that runs downtown to Nevada. I don't live in 'Springs.

The sign(s) must be along the street that runs parallel to the freeway on the east side. I've crossed that street but have never driven down there because I usually was in a hurry to get specimens to the vet clinic on time. To me, it's easier and faster to stop along the freeway on my way into town. I've seen others do that as well.

I have a busy, timed route. The sign just doesn't matter to me, and I disagree that it should.

I have. Thanks. We will have to be diametrically opposed on this one. The sign doesn't mean anything. Nobody I've met down there has mentioned it to me (to be fair, I haven't met a whole lot of them). I'd be real surprised, though, if the sign means anything to people who scrap through trash to live.

I'd appreciate it if you'd think about something for me: if the sign had an opposing phrase on it, would you not stop by and help? Would 48-52 percent of people with an opposing view to any sign stop by? Does it matter why they need help right now? Do these homeless people deserve what they get if they have an opposing view? It's freezing out there. I'm sorry. I just don't understand what difference the sign might make to anyone who wants to help homeless veterans, or how it might motivate someone who would otherwise not give a crap.

The sign. I trust the people are there.

I just thought that if you went there often, and posted the sign, that some FReepers could help.

Sorry. I meant no harm, just trying to be well meaning at this time of year. I’m across the country but could send something if you were looking to pass it out.

Again, my apologies.

No apologies needed. I'm sorry. Just frustrated by others. You didn't do anything.

I'd love to do more, but we scrap by. I'd really be interested in anyone with more knowledge (not difficult) about helping a rotten situation like the one at hand. I'm just having a hard time getting around this sign thing.

Your either Christian or not, if You would not help those people based on whose name is on the sign then you are definitely not Christian.

When more folks start giving donations to the tent city now (now the story has went nationwide) ask the people who live there what they think about the sign once they know it brought their story nationwide.

"I just don't understand what difference the sign might make to anyone who wants to help homeless veterans, or how it might motivate someone who would otherwise not give a crap."

The difference is simple. If people do not know about the situation they can't help. You can try and convince yourself the sign did not help but the fact that you and I are discussing the topic and I live on the other side of the country puts that argument to rest.

I (and many others)would have not known about it. And now that I caught wind of it I have spread the word to all the people on my email list. Those people in turn will tell others. Hopefully someone out in your area will come up with an address where donations can be sent.

Or we could all complain about how the sign was a waste of effort. Ever here the story about the flood and the farmer and God sending him help? ;-)

My heart goes out to you.
It makes me sick that people are getting free cell phones and those with a real need are living in tents.

It sucks.

That's is an excellent point. I guess I can be pretty anal. I was thinking local, not national. Alright. I get it...:-)

If you get wind of anyone setting up a donation HQ for recieving goods and money pass it on. I will tell my local churches and others who work to help folks in need.
