Named and shamed, the Remembrance Day imposter who marched with an impossible array of medals

A Remembrance Day conman who angered veterans by marching in a parade with an impossible array of medals was named and shamed today.

Roger Day strode alongside 600 genuine war heroes wearing a beige SAS beret and a dazzling selection of 21 military medals and badges.

Thousands of well-wishers - including the recently bereaved families of servicemen killed in Afghanistan - clapped and cheered as he marched past.

But organisers became suspicious when they noticed he had medals from campaigns including World War I and II, Korea, the Falklands, awards for both officers and privates and even a foreign medal.

His striking collection of medals even included the Distinguished Service Order and Military Cross.

No single servicemen could have been awarded all the medals, and they were wrongly displayed, said experts.

He was confronted by Jim Nicholson, who helped organise the march in Bedworth, Warks., on November 11 and admitted being a fake. He then promptly disappeared. When approached at his Leicestershire home, Day claimed he could not talk about his SAS service because of the Official Secrets Act.

He said: 'I can't comment on that, like I can't give you any real relevant details. I'm still tied under a lot of the Official Secrets Act.

'They're all proper, pukka campaign medals. Medals I won in conflicts while I was serving with the British forces. 'All I can say is South Atlantic the Gulf, Kuwait and one or two other stations.'

Today he again denied being a fraudster and threatened journalists with a four-letter tirade.

He said: 'If you don't get lost I will prove my military skills. I am not a liar. I was never confronted by anyone at the Bedworth parade.

Oh, I am. I wouldn't trade my 13 years in Navy blue for anything. Strange how you miss it as you grow older.

What I earned is not much, but it is by God MINE.

I also refuse to make it out to be more than it was. Those who justly earn those little bits of medal and cloth have every right to be pissed at those who don't.

For any UK commentors who feel he did nothing wrong, think again. He is taking Valor that belongs to someone else and cheapening the very medals he displays, as well as the sacrifices of many Brave people from both of our countries.

After so much denigration of our service in Viet Nam, I vividly recall many in the 1980’s who never served claim they were “war heroes” to gain sympathy, recognition and even government Veterans benefits they were not entitled to.

He deserves no sympathy and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of their laws if he cannot documement any awards. That cry of secrecy acts prevents him from discussing the medals is hogwash and the first sign of a phony.

Regrettably, sometimes the 'blanket' awards have unintended consequences. During Panama, the host air wing at the base I was stationed at was issued the USAF Outstanding Unit Award w/ Valor for actions during combat. However somehow it was coded to all members assigned to the base. I was assigned to a tenant unit (different command) and had nothing to do with the host air wings mission. I only found this out when I did a review of my records, and the people at the awards/decorations office thought I'd lost my marbles when I told then I did want it because I didn't earn it.
