Did the NRA really endorse Scozzafava for Congress (NY-23) ?
NRA sites | 10-18-09 | Dangus

Is the National Rifle Association ashamed of its own endorsement, or are the media lying to us once again? I was stunned to read that the N.R.A. endorsed pro-gay, pro-abortion, climate alarmist, socialist Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava for Congress in the special, off-year election in New York's 23rd district. The N.R.A. is pro-gun rights, not (necessarily) conservative, but a moderate Democrat helps the N.R.A. maintain its nonpartisan status and reputation more than supporting a liberal Republican. On the other hand, the media widely reported that the N.R.A. endorsed former Vermont governor and Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean. The reality is that the N.R.A. merely gave Dean high grades, but did not endorse him over any other candidate.

Trying to find the truth, I visited the web sites of the National Rifle Association, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund and the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action. On the latter two sites, I found endorsements in the Virginia, and New Jersey governors' races, as well as many local endorsements in Oklahoma. No mention of any endorsement in NY 23rd.

If you live in the area, please your local N.R.A. chapter for confirmation. If they deny it, complain to the local newspapers about this misinformation. If they confirm, be sure to register your disapproval however you see fit.

As far as I can tell, the NRA has endorsed no one in that election.

I would not doubt it. They endorsed that Kirsten Gillibrand lady who turned on them. They endorsed Jack “Our military’s back is broken” Murtha.

The NRA has to work on their endorsements.

Whats the point of endorsing someone who “has a good pro-gun” record if they spend 99% of their supporting legislation and organizations that work against gun rights?

I can’t imagine why they would give high marks or endorse these people. It amazes me.

These people will fund ACORN, Planned Parentood, PBS, NPR, Teachers Union, AARP etc etc

What are those groups positions on guns?

But yet the NRA doesn’t consider funding them to be negatives on their scorecard?

NRA is a one trick pony — they have tunnel vision, examining NO other issue than their little, specific agenda items. They DON’T try to take acount of the “bigger issues” or how they can and WILL effect their own agendas. It’s reall quite sad. I had to stop supporting them a few years back (as did my Dad)because they endorsed Democrats that, with the exception of a couple of notable “pro-gun” statements and positions, were Statist Socialists. I’d rather support folks like the Gun Owners of America because they aren’t so fixated on their issues that they can’t REASON out the implications of Big-Governoverment rules. And, OTHER freedoms which will SURELY take our 2nd Amendment freedoms and gut what’s left of the Constitution.

Fred Thompson issed a statement today on this election:

You’ll love what he has to say!

http://www.fredpac.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/102009NY23.mp3

The official NRA endorsement below:

Dear Assemblywoman Scozzafava:

On behalf of our four million members, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund is proud to endorse your candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in the special election in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

During your tenure in the New York Assembly, you have been a strong and consistent supporter of the Second Amendment. You are the only candidate in this special congressional election with a solid pro-gun legislative record.

As you know, the Second Amendment and our hunting heritage are very important to New Yorkers, and your positions on these issues demonstrate a solid commitment to the rights of law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen.

Based on your tested and proven record in the New York Assembly, as well as your responses to our federal candidate questionnaire, you have earned an “A” rating from the NRAPVF. On November 3, we urge our members, gun owners and sportsmen in New York’s 23rd congressional district to vote for you for Congress.

Good luck and we look forward to our continued relationship.

Sincerely,
Chris W. Cox
Chairman

The NRA (And that's National Rifle Association, not National Republican Association) is a single issue advocacy group. The NRA does gun rights and only gun rights. They don't do the "bigger issues". That's how they came to be the most powerful, most successful advocacy group in the US. As to endorsements, they will always reward actual, pro-gun voting records, even from liberal Democrats, over promises.

What do gays have to do with guns. I think they shoot and hunt too.

Speaking for myself, it's germaine because gay "rights" are not about rights nor about being homosexual. Being homosexual is between an individual and his or her conscience and God. "Gay rights" is about those who want to be openly homosexual in American culture and demand that there be no negative feedback. "Gay rights" is a bastardization of the English language because no rights are conferred; instead, rights are taken away, specifically the God-given right of all human beings to discriminate against and reject open homosexuality among them. Homosexuals should be able to be secretive or open about their choice -- and all people should have the right to embrace or reject open homosexuality as they choose in their business and private lives.

"Gay rights" is all about denying the God-given rights of others to reject open homosexuality. No rights are bestowed -- only denied.

The 2nd amendment says we have a God-given right to keep and bear arms, including guns. The NRA (to which I give financial support fairly regularly) fights against those who would remove that right. It is hypocritical and inconsistent for someone to advocate one God-given right, and to reject another. Pro-gun folks who are also pro "gay rights" are doing exactly that.

The NRA is the most successful conservative organization in America for a reason. FOCUS. They have their job to do and they do it.

If the left wants gun control and the citizens disarmed, they first have to destroy the NRA.

Republican majority in Congress or don’t you understand the political system we have?

What do you care anyway? The active NRA members on this board have the initials in their tagline or their homepage. Nonmembers and people sitting on the sidelines don’t have the right to criticize.

As a life member of the NRA and a conservative I spoke directly to Wayne LaPierre about his terrible decision to endorse Harry Reid over Jim Gibbons five years ago.

He answered “We have to endorse candidates who support us.”
When I countered with “On the day we see a Democrat in the White House, 70 in the Senate and 275 in the House what will they do first: out law the Republican party or take a razor blade and cut out the Second Amendment?”
He had no answer.
