McCain on Palin: 'Let's come up with a winning combination next time' [next time???]
Politico / CNN ^ | 2009-10-11

(snip)

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," the Arizona Republican said: "When we selected, or asked, Sarah Palin to be my running mate, it energized our party. We were ahead in the polls, until the stock market crashed. And she still is a formidable force in the Republican Party. And I have great affection for her. Will Sarah and I - did we always agree on everything in the past? Will we in the future? No. But let's let a thousand flowers bloom. Let's come up with a winning combination next time."

I didn't know a president could order tax cuts.

Everyone here knows he can't.

Everyone here also knows he can LEAD Congress to pass those tax cuts.

Well, everyone but you.

Me too, on both accounts, although I salved my pride by knowing that I was also voting for Palin.

Or rather, I voted for McCan’t because of Palin and against Obama. Even that wouldn’t get me to vote for McCan’t again. I’ll just stay home (along with a few million TEA Party people).

Hahahahahahah. LOLOLOLOL

Why didn't he lead them to make them permanent?

The original poster said Bush somehow kept the unemployment down. I want to know how?

Was it pushing Fannie and Freddie to increase the purchase of loans? Is that what drove the economy for 7 1/2 years as he claimed? Was it allowing millions of illegals in this country and trying, like Obama is, to give the citizenship?

I really would like to know what Bush did?

Was it trying to sell off U.S. ports to foreign ownership? What was Bush's (other than tax cuts) that spurred the economy for seven and a half years. Was it completely ignoring the crappy banking practices that got us into all this trouble. Was it allowing Chris Cox to eliminate the uptick rule in the market? Is that what gave us all the "prosperity"?

McCain is dying to be somebody.

I can't blame him for wanting to be anybody but McCain.

“Sometimes it is said that man can not be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the forms of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.”

“Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged against provisions against danger, real or pretended from abroad.”

“You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down — up to a man’s age-old dream; the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order — or down to the ant heap totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.”

“As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska.”

One of these things are not like the others, not like the others...

McCain doesn’t honestly think he can run in 2012, does he? If he’s even considering it, he’s gone way beyond delusional, and must be well on his way senility. Personally, I think he’s going to throw what weight he has left, behind Romney, which will probably be a good thing for Palin.

Oh, shut up already John. You have no part in the next ‘combination’ and if you do I hope it isn’t to support Sarah. Go campaign for Romney. Please!?

"Make that Palin/Patraeus, please."

I'll go with the first version- He has what it takes to save our stupid butts from the damage that "we" inflicted upon ourselves last November. Sarah, God bless her, has the star power to help the team, and to make a great VP, and a great punched ticket for her own run in 2020. GQ Magazine Dec 2008: "Leader of the Year: Right Man, Right Time". I think that they called it right.

I told you guys, the RNC will not allow Sarah in, no way, no how, 3rd party time ...

The RNC can want whoever they want to want, but its up to the rank and file to pull the levers on the primary days. Each RNC member (theoretically) gets one vote each, just like we do.

Of course, it was the rank and file GOP who pulled enough levers for McCain, so who knows who we'll get next time.

I get the feeling we are gonna end up with 8 long years of the Obamanation. Absolutely NO way Sarah is gonna get anywhere near the GOP nomination. I’m almost suspecting that they hate her more than the libs, since she is a threat to their establishment as well.

The one and only time McCain led in the polls was when he added Sarah to the ticket. Then the idiot forced her to shut up, went to Washington and signed on to TARP. Afterwards no one could save his worthless behind.

So the winning combination to me would seem to include Sarah with McCain booted to the curb.

I’m not even going to address the “shallow” statement. Dead wrong there. But I will point out something you seem oblivious to. Palin is well respected among Christians. True. But she is NOT their preferred candidate.

It’s Huckabee.

The people supporting Sarah most strongly right now are disaffected conservatives, some libertarians, small government types. They represent the Tes Party movement. Guys like Dobson are in LOVE with Huckabee. They rejected Fred Thompson because he wasn’t outspoken enough or willing to use the government enough to their liking and than caused a fissure in the primaries leading to a split between Romney, McCain and Huckabee.

I see nothing that will change this anytime soon. Huckabee offers the same social positions Sarah does, but he promises the use of government to enforce them. She would be their second choice, but she is not their first.

"Of course, it was the rank and file GOP who pulled enough levers for McCain, so who knows who we'll get next time. "

That's total hogwash. The rank and file GOP (or conservatives) never got a chance to vote on the conservatives in the primaries, because the first four states eliminated them, in their open elections. The first four states represent less than four percent of the US population.

Pray tell, who these Christians are and where one might find them?

Because I can't find hide nor hair of them where I live. We tend to recognize self-serving snake oil salesmen for what they are. And the Huckster and his clan carry more than a whiff of sulfur about them.

You may be right, but I am not so confident. Based on what I’ve seen since the Reagan years, I noticed that generals and admirals seldom make good politicians.

Their training and instincts have been developed and refined in a totally different arena. I think that by the time the nomination fight rolls around, Sarah will have been tempered under sufficient fire and will have gained the body of knowledge and insight she will need to be successful.
