British Government hosts petition to remove Ted Kennedy's 'IRA' knighthood

Thousands of people have signed an online petition hosted by the British Government to remove the late Ted Kennedy's knighthood.

The petition's creator Stephen Clements says he started the petition because he claims that Kennedy supported the IRA.

"Ted Kennedy throughout the 70's and 80's actively supported groups whose sole purpose was to financially support IRA families," he said.

"This support enabled the IRA to continue its muder (sic) campaign against UK citizens for a longer period than would otherwise have happened and contributed to the number of deaths on both sides.

"It is highly unlikely that the US Government would have rewarded people who financially supported the families of the 911 bombers - so why does the UK Prime Minister believe that we should reward similar people."

So far, 5397 people have signed up for the petition which expires on March 7, 2010.

There were howls of outrage in Britain in March when the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced the award.

Conservative politicians said Kennedy did not deserve to be knighted as he was too closely linked to the Irish nationalist movement.

Speaking in March, Norman Tebbit, the former Tory Cabinet minister whose wife was confined to a wheelchair after being badly injured during the IRA bombing at the party's 1984 Birghton conference denounced the honorary knighthood as "wholly inappropriate."

He said: 'Edward Kennedy may never have said outwardly he supported the IRA but he certainly leaned towards extreme Republicanism. He was certainly no friend of the UK."

What a terrible thing to do to His Royal Highness, Lard Kennedy, Prince of Pork, Duke of Dewars, Count of Cutty, Sir Rhosis of Liver, Commander of the USS Oldsmobile, Inventor of the Waitress Sandwich, Hero of the Battle of Au Bar, Olympic Champion Swimmer, etc., etc. etc.

P.S. If any of you mean-old-dirty-rotten-nasty-old Freepers ever feel the urge, you can sign Ed-Lard-O's petition HERE

"Edward Kennedy may never have said outwardly he supported the IRA but he certainly leaned towards extreme Republicanism"

Someone explain to the brits that "Republicanism" in the U.S. does not mean what it means in the U.K.

TED KENNEDY: called for a united Ireland, and declared that Protestants who could not accept this “should be given a decent opportunity to go back to Britain”

A knight in a shining Oldsmobile...

The only reason his car was so shinny was it was wet with sea water.

Yep, us Brits have no love of ‘teddy’.

We won’t forget his support for the IRA’s aims.

It’s been nice to see the pundits recalling this....we don’t forget which side he was on and no tears were shed in this part of the world I assure you.

It wasn’t Barack’s to give back. He is the pilot of this ship called America, but he can’t sell the boat and furnishings.
