Couric: ‘I can see New Jersey from my house’

Katie Couric, in her commencement speech today at Princeton, made a few jokes at the expense of Rush Limbaugh, Donald Rumsfeld and Sarah Palin.

The full speech is at HuffPost, but here are a few highlights.

- When Princeton called to invite me, I was thrilled. It also gave me a perfect excuse for turning down Harvard and Yale — my safety schools! And since I’ve been called a cougar lately in the tabloid press — today I’m very happy to be an honorary tiger! Coming here was a real no-brainer! After all, I can see New Jersey from my house!

- There may be some opportunities in the Republican Party. They’re still looking for an effective spokesman, and the only person they can find so far is Rush Limbaugh ... and he won’t take the job because he doesn’t want to give up his prescription plan.

- I understand Class of 54’s Donald Rumsfeld has been charged with guarding the Big Cannon. I don’t want to say he’s taking his job too far, but he’s reportedly been telling President Obama there are weapons of mass destruction hidden at Rutgers.

Can someone explain why the left is so ignorant as to think Palin statement was stupid in regards to being able to see Russia from Alaska?

It a relative point that as Governor she deals with a major and very different geopolitical reality that no other Governor has to deals with or even come close to when it's comes to foreign relation as compared to let say... Arkansas ... or did Bill the C have a hostile Texas with nukes on his border?

I thought commencement speeches were given to congratulate and motivate college graduates?

So now they have become soapboxes for the socialists to spout their political agendas.........We're so screwed!

Ann, I don’t know how common it is around the country, but at the Ivies, class day occurs the day before graduation. The graduating seniors dress in their robes and wear ridiculous but often creative headwear and parade around campus and to the class day event. The class day speaker is either a comedian or someone who mistakes him or herself for one. Fortunately when my son graduated we had a real comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, as class day speaker. Graduation, of course, is much more solemn.
