Obama at Georgetown: The mystery of the missing sign [Free Republic cited]
Washington Times ^ | April 15, 2009 | By Julia Duin

When President Obama gave his economics speech at Georgetown University on Tuesday, several folks noticed something was missing.

That "something" was an ancient monogram -- the letters IHS -- that symbolizes the name of Jesus. It was missing from a wooden archway above the dais in Gaston Hall where the president delivered his 45-minute speech.

The gold-lettered monogram appeared near a painting of three female figures -- symbolizing morality, faith and patriotism -- and decorative edging along the wall that spelled out the Jesuit motto "Ad majorem Dei gloriam"—"To the greater glory of God." Georgetown was founded by the Jesuits.

Some of them may have been turning in their graves in the cemetery across campus at the sight of the missing monogram which looked like a blacked-out space above a blue backdrop and a row of American flags flanking the nation's chief executive. Was Georgetown selling short its Catholic heritage, we wondered.

I contacted the university this morning to ask why the monogram -- in this post-Easter season -- was hidden as its absence had been noted by several bloggers, including Dawn Eden -- formerly of the New York Post -- on her dawn patrol blog.

Julie Bataille from the university's press office e-mailed me that the White House had asked that all university signage and symbols behind the stage in Gaston Hall be covered.

"The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they've done for other policy speeches," she wrote. "Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn't high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context."

"I also noticed the Free Republic blog had photos comparing "before" and "after" depictions of the unfortunate monogram, which the university covered with what looks like a black cloth."

...and decorative edging along the wall that spelled out the Jesuit motto "Ad majorem Dei gloriam"—"To the greater glory of God."

It's easier to cover up "Ad majorem Dei gloriam" than to change it to something appropriate to the occasion like "Ad minorem Dei gloriam"

Obama wanted all symbols of Jesus covered, note also the array of bunting and flags. What does Christ say about denying HIM?!!!

It’s like he’s ashamed of Christianity or something. Has to hide from the cross. What was that church that he attended for twenty years all about? Oh, yeah. A bunch of black liberation theologists (supposedly EX Muslims) preaching against America. Not God Bless America, GD America!!

Obama can KMWIA.

If I’ve ever had a good idea...this is it.

For now on, everyone at any and every protest associated with Obama should simply say... IHS.

Imagine thousands holding up this one simple sign. It would be one of those things that people would ask over and over...What does that mean? And the word would spread. And the media would go crazy trying to dance around and ignore it.

Actually the letters were hidden behind a piece of black plywood, I think somebody said on that thread. But it’s always good to be quoted. Should attract a few new freepers.

I first came to FR when the New York Times ran a long hit piece on conservative reactions to the Vince Foster scandal, and incautiously mentioned FR’s Whitewater site, as it was called then, by name.

Georgetown also was extremely proud of its most famous or infamous alumnus, Bill Clinton, and used to swoon over him back in the 90s. Pretty much as Fr. Reese now swoons over Barry.

This idiot wouldn't make a pimple on a Christian's ass.

My intention is not to piss off any Catholic Freeper, but my lifelong respect of the Catholic Church and schools has taken a terrible beating of late.

He’s afraid of Christianity. He’s afraid of mirrors, crosses, garlic, etc. But most of all, Jim Rob, he’s afraid of our secret weapon: ridicule.

Ridicule is the way to move this individual out of darkness and into the exposure of light.

He’s throwing so many things at us so fast, that we don’t, or arent’, respond correctly. We have to forget fifty things, concentrate on five.

We have to have legions don masks a la Dr. Raoul and show up and ridicule this guy everywhere he is.

War Criminal
Profligate spender
Despiser of innocent life and believing people.

That’s three good places to begin. But you have to do it in a funny, edgy, teasing way. That is sure to rattle him. V’s wife.

Yeah - Eight (8) American flags behind him

One is not enough?

Who was it who used so many flags in the 30s and 40s?

Good post devolve and appropriate comparison. The drapes and flags were to cover the religious icons on the walls behind him.

I had forgot to put in the picture with the “IHS” symbol. Just did that and will reload it.

This makes me sick. It makes one wonder what kind of upbringing a person like this has had. What does it show our children? It tells me that if he doesn’t have God in his heart, then his sense of compassion has flown south!

He has obviously sold his soul!
