Obama Admin Paralyzed by 4 Somali Pirates In a Lifeboat ( MS works to paint Obama as a Hero )
Flopping Aces ^ | Scott

Posted on 04/13/2009 6:29:43 AM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

Floppingaces has been reporting on the problem of Somali Piracy for well over a year now. Most of those reports have originated from Bill Roggio’s The Long War Journal. Finally, the mainstream media can no longer ignore the problem, and it’s “suddenly” in the news…well, it ain’t news to our readers. They’ve seen this problem go unaddressed for a long time.

They’ve seen Somali pirates seize ships carrying hazardous materials-materials so toxic that entire villages were wiped out and the UN suspected WMD! Our readers have read about ships carrying a dozen Soviet-built main battle tanks seized by Somali pirates. They’ve even read about a supertanker being taken. Now the pirates have attacked an American-flagged vessel. The crew fought back (like Americans on Flight 93 fought back). The Captain was taken by the 4 surviving pirates, and they left in a lifeboat.

Luckily, we have President Obama in the White House. His “talks without preconditions” foreign policy can’t possibly fail (oops, the boat carrying a negotiator was fired on and driven back by the 4 pirates). His reputation as a man of conviction, courage, and fearlessness no doubt will scare the pirates into letting go of the heroic American Captain (oops, the 4 pirates in the lifeboat said their not afraid). Surely the 4 pirates will hand over their hostage any time now, right?

I lied, he did:

No, this doesn’t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters - especially those who have held up World Food Program supplies. But the “pirates” have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news site WardherNews conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking - and it found 70 percent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defense of the country’s territorial waters.”

From what I've read, Our fearless leader basically said "If you see an opportunity, take it". Makes him look tough, while giving him an out if there's a screwup. About the best that we could expect from a politician.

Should've been done days ago. But, to give credit where credit is due, it was the right decision, IMHO.

I agree the credit should go where it belongs and that is with the Commander and the Navy Seals..CPT Phillips is a hero also he was very brave and should get a really big raise as well as the crew on that ship..

I think if the crew on these cargo ships are not allowed to have guns the owners should spend the money to put electrical fencing around the ship and when they see that these bastards are trying to board their ship the current should be turned up enough to kill ever last one of these cut throats..and then throw them to the sharks..

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn’t act on those crimes - but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit corridor for 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, we begin to shriek about “evil.” If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause - our crimes - before we send in the gunboats to root out Somalia’s criminals.

What the...?

If I’m not mistaken,(which is a crap-shoot proposition in itself) there is really no such thing as ‘ordinary somalis’, at least in the sense to which we are accustomed. Somalia itself is one of those places that exists as we know it as the result of a British mandate. An aggregate of tribal, religious and familial clans with no identifiable common purpose. A phony country. No ‘government’ to speak of, when ‘negotiation’ occurs it is of necessity with those who have the guns, and for that reason alone. Polling them as if they are Joe Citizen being asked his preference in breakfast cereals justifies nothing. I will argue that since they are not really a country, then they have no rights to territorial waters. Since they are a menace to international trade, even if they say it’s for their own defense, all measures necessary to abate that menace are justified.

I think the delay in Obama authorizing the change of ROE was due to the arrival of a Seal team with experienced water borne snipers. Once they were ready to join the likely Marines from the Boxer,,they were changed and allowed the Capt of the Bainbridge to judge when to turn them loose. The best shots then took their shots and the marines covered the Seal assault on the boat.
We may never know that level of detail..but the Captain is safe and now the world knows that we need to act to clear up the piracy problem.

I’m kind of in your camp, and I was discussing this the other day. My view is that Conservatives can act like whining meemies on every little fault or non-fault of 0bama or can attempt to select issues that have meat on their bones.

I'm with you. There seems to be an immediate knee-jerk anti response to ANYTHING Obama does, and it gets tiresome because we're preaching to the choir and all know this is gonna be one lousy administration. I thought the early know-nothing criticism of O when the skipper was saved was off-base and got some replies on that. While our captains have certain standing orders, I don't see them shooting up anybody, unless they have the explicit OK of Washington.

AFAIK, there’s literally no way to know whether 0bama gave the order, didn’t give the order, wished them well, hated their white asses, or pretended to go to church. And IMO it doesn’t matter.
Spot On. We got the buggers (too bad about one surviving) and the president gets the glory - that's reality. Any speculation beyond that is akin to arguing over how many angels fit on the head of a pin.

Bozo didn't change the ROE, there is a standing order, not given by Bozo but in effect in any hostage situation, to shoot if the hostage's life is in imminent danger. The Captain of the Bainbridge used this to rescue the hostage.

The Navy said as much in a presser, that Bozo had nothing to do with it. Read the one link at the first part of this thread, "OBama didn't order the rescue", or something like that.

Bozo didn't want these people shot, he wanted to talk them to death and prove his way works. I would be he is pissed but has no recourse now but to try and claim credit.

"there’s literally no way to know whether 0bama gave"

Yes there is. if obama doesn't use the military at all or very limited role with future terrorist hostages actions. Would mean he didn't give any order other then standard military protocol.

I believe he will punish the military for killing these poor Muslims.
