Postmaster General: Mail days may need to be cut

WASHINGTON (AP) - Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery, the postmaster general told Congress on Wednesday, in asking lawmakers to lift the requirement that the agency deliver mail six days a week. If the change happens, that doesn't necessarily mean an end to Saturday mail delivery. Previous post office studies have looked at the possibility of skipping some other day when mail flow is light, such as Tuesday.

Faced with dwindling mail volume and rising costs, the post office was $2.8 billion in the red last year. "If current trends continue, we could experience a net loss of $6 billion or more this fiscal year," Potter said in testimony for a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee.

In the excerpted article it says the USPS has cut 120,000 jobs since 2002. I suggest they continue and become even more ruthless.

That is a very unfair assessment of government employees. I left private sector in 2003 and have worked for the VA since then and have never worked so hard in my life.

Canada has home delivery of letter mail Mon. to Fri., never on Sat or Sun. except for some parcel delivery by vehicle contractors only.

I agree! I really don’t care. I have to walk about 10 minutes just to GET my mail - nice in summer but a bummer on a day like today so less days to have to lug it in is fine by me.

I live in downtown Oceanside, CA. We have the old post office and 8 blocks away on the other side of the freeway we have the newer one. God forbid they would close the old one and sell the property.

On my trips home, I have seen many very small towns that still have a post office.

With e-mail, FedEx and UPS, there's no need for them. They need to close post offices. Of course it will create much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

And, of course, they could just close the entire service.

“That is a very unfair assessment of government employees.”

Like many stereotypes this one will have its exceptions too.

That being said, this generalization is probably more accurate than most.

When the rest of us are losing our jobs or are facing a strong prospect of doing so, it infuriates me to see govt. employees are mostly exempt from layoffs or budget cuts.

Well, there it is folks...GOVERNMENT THINK!  Yeah, Tuesday huh?  I wonder how many credit card payments would be penalized if the bill was due on Tuesday but received on Wednesday?  How about generall business transactions?

That statement clearly shows just out of touch with the real world the postal service management is.  Their business model is:

The slower the business, the higher the price of postage along with the worsening of professionalism (pissy ass mail service).

No matter what, there will not be a single person laid off in spite of more and more customers finding better service by UPS, FEDEX, the internet and email.

Yesterday as I was driving I started thinking about just how much the postal service wastes on making and selling gobs of new stamps each year.  How about a single stamp with a price on it ONLY?  No more stamps to appease collectors and people who like "pretty" stamps.  How much would that save?

The horror of it all is that the post service clearly shows what all socialized private business will become.

What do you think comrade?

Federal employees are not exempt from layoffs or budget cuts. Between 2004 and 2005 the local arm of the federal agency I worked for had a 20% reduction in force.
