FLDS teen disputes mom's book
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | January 27, 2009 | Brooke Adams

Yearning For Zion Ranch, Texas » Betty Jane Jessop's favorite phrase: "Good grief!"

That's what Betty utters as she reads the new epilogue in her mother's best-selling book, Escape . In those pages, Carolyn Jessop describes her daughter's return to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, calling her brainwashed.

"It just makes me want to laugh," said Betty, 19, shaking her head.

Besides Carolyn herself, the character in Escape that most intrigues readers is Betty -- the second of Carolyn's eight children with FLDS bishop Merril Jessop.

Why, they ask, did Betty return to the sect after four years in mainstream society? And: Is she OK?

Soon they may be able to read Betty's answer to those questions. Since April, the teenager has been working on a book about her experiences, aided by older sister Maggie Jessop.

Do YOU defend the practices of the FLDS?

Typical liberal inability to comprehend the topic combined with personal ad hominem attacks. You can read for yourself the concerns I posted about people like yourself justifying the government invasion of homes to take hundreds of children away from their families because of their religious beliefs.

Especially with the new administration, is it really that hard to imagine the same scenario that happened in Texas happening all across the country? I can foresee the day not far away when parents who teach their children that sodomy is a crime against God will be called "abusers" and have their children taken away from them and given to homosexual foster parents.

It's already starting:

Wow, after reading your screed the first thought that came to my mind is, do you know her personally, and if not, on what are you basing your opinion??

On the posted ARTICLE! I notice that, like yourself, none of the supporters of government violence against families bothered to read the actual article. Whose that Freeper whose tagline is "Proudly posting without reading the article since 1998"?

Carolyn Jessop's own daughter is writing a book about what it was like living with this single mother who felt she had a mission to incite another Waco in Texas, but who was incapable of caring for her own children. If you had read the posted article you would have known that.

You know this is not the Religion Forum...

I feel your comments are personal attacks on brytlea that are uncalled for and not allowed in the news threads...

BS. If you read my post I said maybe not on that YFZ ranch. I am told that place supported itself. However many other FLDS places don't. I've seen news shows where it is clearly shown how the mothers live & that they do get welfare. I believe the info from Rick Ross over yours. I do read other sites, lol.

Hildale -- Welfare is often how polygamist communities like Hildale in Utah and Colorado City in Arizona substantially support themselves. Polygamists often use food stamps to feed their families. Former polygamist Benjamin Bisline said, "If it wasn't for government subsidies, these people couldn't survive. There are people here with 15 wives on welfare.'' Bisline still lives in a polygamist town.

According to federal paperwork, Colorado City is filled largely with unwed mothers without any visible spousal support. But Beagley said this has become a polygamist tradition, so that no proof exists of their many marriages through public records. Husbands marry only once in a civil ceremony. Other subsequent marriages are done "spiritually, but not legally. Beagley concluded, "It's a way of life. You get married, you go on welfare, and that's it.''

Are you FLDS perhaps?

The article about the grandparents & the gay men adopting the children didn’t happen in the US. It happened in Edinburgh, Scotland. I don’t doubt things could get like that here & maybe something like that has happened here already... However if you are going to post a comment please give the correct location & facts. No sense in trying to make people think it happened in the states.

One of the questions that the FLDS supporters never seem to answer is this...How does the father of 20+ children spend quality time parenting each child? Is he able to give each child the love & support he/she needs? IMO that in itself would be a full time job. Even if the man supports each family himself I still wonder how he has time to be a father.

And then there is the issue of the Lost Boys.

While it is difficult to estimate the exact number of young boys, some only 13 years of age, rough estimates have the number at 400 to as many as 1,400 young boys have been put on to the streets after having been thrown out of the FLDS for a variety of reasons, some as little as kissing a girl, or wearing a short sleeved shirt. They were raised to fear the outside world, fear authorities and have a very limited education, but because men in the FLDS sect must have at least three wives, the women to men ratio wouldn't allow for that if the boy children were all allowed to stay and with some of the FLDS men having up to 10 wives, that makes it even more necessary to send these children packing, out into a world they have been taught to fear, to sleep on the street.

I don't understand a parent who tosses away their son or daughter. I don't care what the "prophet" says. Nor do I understand how a family can be given to another man when the "prophet" says so.

Interestingly, instead of answering my very simple question, you proceed to attack me (calling someone a liberal of FR is an attack) and then accuse ME of what you’re going.

“Mormons are not Christians and you know it.”

Jesus died for me, too, and I love Him with all my heart. The Holy Ghost has feelings and His feelings are hurt when you accuse me of not being a Christian. Heavenly Father is my Dad.

Thanks for your comments. It is so amazing to me that so-called conservatives on this site would defend a military-type assault on a religious community, rounding up the kids at gunpoint, spitting all over the Constitution. You are right; it boggles the mind.

Jhn 3:17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

God sent Jesus to die for you...

It’s a free gift that has already been given...

Got Bible scripture on that ???

Dont bother looking there is none...

The Holy Ghost is not concerned that I told you the truth...

He is not touchy feely and not a bit “hurt” and weepy...

Just who do you think the Holy Ghost is ???

A little mungrel dog ??? A “sensitive” man ??? A PMS woman ???

The Holy Ghost is the third person of the Trinity...

The Holy Ghost is God...

The Holy Ghost would be more concerned if I had lied to you...

And the Holy Ghost is concerned because mormons are not Christians

I would recommend Under the Banner of Heaven.

Written about a murder in one of these cults. Written by a reporter who isn’t religious.

It gives good background on how these nuts got started.

You guys know of any significant differences between the FLDS group and the LDS group, other than the geographical/ spacial polygamy issue?

FLDS believe their prophet to be the true prophet and LDS are apostates.
