Slain Teen Supposed To Be at Sleepover (NM)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | December 31, 2008 | Jeff Proctor

Posted on 12/31/2008 9:15:29 AM PST by CedarDave

Raylene Jaramillo was supposed to be sleeping over at a friend's house early Saturday ... not attending a party where alcohol was being served and older boys were packing guns — a party where she was fatally shot at point-blank range.

Police say Efrain Valenzuela shot Raylene, 14, after Jaramillo or another girl made a comment about his nickname during a party in Southwest Albuquerque.

Valenzuela, 19, has a criminal history that includes convictions for being a minor in possession of alcohol in 2007 and marijuana and paraphernalia possession in April, court records show. He also has a case pending on a negligent use of a firearm charge ...

Valenzuela remained at the Metropolitan Detention Center on Tuesday on an open count of murder. His bond was set at $1 million cash only.

~~snip~~

Alexandria Perea and her father had gone to the Senas' home to ask ... if Raylene could come to their house for dinner and a sleepover, Mitch Sena said. [Instead] Raylene and Alexandria had gone to the home of Margie Ferrell, 33 ... shortly after midnight Saturday, according to police.

...Alexandria told officers that the two girls were in the kitchen at Ferrell's home when Valenzuela walked in. Raylene asked Valenzuela what his name was, and Alexandria told her his name was "Mocco," similar to the Spanish word "moco," which means "mucus" or "snot."

Police Chief Ray Schultz said there was some conversation about the nickname, and Valenzuela got offended.

"It's Mocco," Valenzuela allegedly said, "I'll show you what's up," court records state. Valenzuela then allegedly put a .40-caliber pistol against Raylene's forehead and fired one shot, killing her, according to court records. He was arrested about three hours later when police tracked him to his home on 98th NW.

This Margie Ferrell is a real piece of work. She had been cited previously for holding rowdy parties where underage children, drinking and armed men attended. Police had been called to her house six times in the past nine months. She remains in jail without bond due to probation violation on a sentence resulting from an earlier arrest for partying with minors where guns were fired.

Pretty tough guy to take on a 14 year-old girl with nothing but a gun. Quite the macho man.

Would she be an accessory to murder or manslaughter for creating the environment?

More, from the earlier article:

"The history of the house is very concerning," Schultz said. "There have been 14 calls to her home since July 4, 2005, and many of those have been for loud music, parties and disturbances."

Mr. Perea’s got quite a bit of explaining to do as well.

Dang! Over a nickname? Culturally sensitive, aren’t they?

Good question but I don’t have an answer. She remains in jail on the probation violation. No doubt the DA is looking at additional charges.

When I was growing up, some close family friends of ours who had two daughters very close to my age, had an absolutely inflexible “no sleepovers” rule. Very wise, and ought to be the norm.

Yup. She was supposed to be at Alexandria’s house for the “sleepover.” Probably had some school friends who called and told them there was a party nearby and picked them up and drove to it.

WTF!?

Can we dispense with the formality of a trial, and publicly hang this frigging bastard by his “snot”-filled nutsack from some high-tension power line? Why do I suspect he is an illegal alien?

Margie Ferrell should be locked up in solitary confinement for the rest of her life, fed only bread and water, and given only two items for her cell: a honey pot to dispense her bodily wastes; and a 8x10 morgue picture of the 14 year-old girl with the bullet hole in her forehead. What a pathetic excuse for a human being.

No doubt the DA is looking at additional charges.

I wonder if the cops got a search warrant to look for drugs at the house. If found, possession, if nothing else, could be added to the charges.

Safe to assume Margie is a drug dealer. No other reason why she’d want to be hosting parties for hordes of unruly teenagers.

Some gang bangers will shoot you for simply looking at them. They are too stupid to have a rational conversation. They are hot headed, short tempered and armed. There's no cultural sensitivity involved.

We got nervous when our daughter would go on “sleepovers”. She was absolutely prohibited from leaving the house where she was staying without calling us, but that didn’t stop her from sneaking out once the parents went to bed.

She was caught one time doing that and was grounded for so long she forgot what the rest of the world looked like. Harsh, maybe, but stuff like this is why we were so strict.

Also yet another reminder to parents when dealing with their kid’s activities: verify, verify, verify. NEVER assume you are being told the truth, been there, done that and it’s not easy, parenting is hard work but the work basically consist of COMMON SENSE but follow-up is an absolute must do.

This story should be passed on to every parent who has a daughter who wants to attend a “sleepover.”
