Thousands Protest, Vandalize Church in Egypt
At least five hurt as rioters stone, burn structure after inauguration of extension.

ISTANBUL, November 26 (Compass Direct News) - Thousands of Muslim protestors on Sunday (Nov. 23) attacked a Coptic church in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt, burning part of it, a nearby shop and two cars and leaving five people injured.
Objecting to a newly constructed extension to the Coptic church of St. Mary and Anba Abraam in Ain Shams, the huge crowd of angry protestors gathered outside the church at around 5 p.m. following a consecration service for the addition earlier that day.
Chanting, "We will demolish the church," "Islam is the solution" and "No God but Allah," according to Helmy Guirguis, president of the U.K. Coptic Association, rioters pelted the church with stones and burned part of the structure; priests and worshipers were trapped inside, and five people were injured.
"It was a terrifying moment," said lawyer Nabil Gobrayel, who was inside the church at the time. "They were shouting ‘holy slogans' like, ‘We will bring the church down,', ‘The priest is dead' and ‘The army of Muhammad is coming.'"

We have three Copts who are members of our Orthodox parish. They very seldom talk about what’s going on down in Egypt but each has said that they counted some Mohammedans among their very dearest friends, that most Mohammedans are not violent etc. They are shocked at what they hear from us (especially from little old me). They do say that they see the origins of the Mohammedan/Coptic problem in the years of British rule and the nationalist movement of Nasser which has gradually moved to accommodation with Mohammedan radicals to stay in power. I think they are also convinced, as are our Syrian, Lebanese and Jordanian parishioners, that Christians have no future in the Middle East, if only because of demographics. They have other reasons of the sort Westerners won’t want to hear.

I suspect that’s part of what is going on, but only part. Remember, it was just within the last 100 years that Christians were majority populations or near majorities in many areas of the ME. The rise of Arab nationalism after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Great Power games which were and are played in the ME changed the modus vivendi which had developed and prevailed for centuries out there. That some Eastern Christians would today still insist that they could be close to Mohammedans or that Mohammedanism while at the same time despairing of any future in the ME isn’t really surprising. I get the impression that they are deluding themselves at least on a person to person level, about friendships with Mohammedans. I am, however, more than a bit hesitant to assume I know better than they do, seeing as how they actually come from there and lived their lives there.
