Army General William A. Knowlton who was superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) at the time.

I wonder if the lineage holds...LTC Thomas Knowlton was a member of a regiment of Rangers during our War for Independence. The MI Corps has an award named after him for outstanding accomplishment in the Military Intelligence field.
