It was Air New Zealand to the rescue on Wednesday morning after a Qantas 747 was forced to "fly blind" over the Pacific Ocean.

The Qantas flight had to rely on an Air New Zealand jet to guide it to safety after its radar failed leaving the crew flying in darkness.

Passengers on the QF12 flight from Los Angeles to Sydney awoke to the surprise sunrise over Auckland city and the announcement the flight had been diverted, passenger Sean Lygo said.

"The captain was fantastic, he allowed us to sleep all night and we were unaware of any real problems.

"He woke us at around 5:30 just simply by saying 'good morning, hope you have slept well, I would like to tell you that we are on the way to New Zealand'."

Lygo said the captain then continued to inform the passengers they has lost the radar and were flying blind but had managed to befriend an Air New Zealand jet who was guiding them to safety.

The Air New Zealand flight was 35km away from the Qantas plane when the captain made radio contact asking for assistance.

It's a skill I'd want to have.

I worked at a C-130 LockHeed Martin Flight Training Center in Marietta, Georgia and we trained the Kiwi Air Force Crews. They were always extremely friendly and certainly enjoyed downing the Booze. They were always ready to party at the drop of a hat. They also didn’t observe the rule of no drinking so many hours before flying, when it came to flying in our Flight Simulator. There were many times the Simulator had to come off motion to avoid a crew member from barfing in the Simulator. Sometimes they didn’t make it into the restroom and we had to charge them to have a special cleaning crew to come in and clean up their mess.

In regards to this article, the NEWS Morons surely know how to show their ignorance when it comes to reporting Aviation Incidents.

The only radar aboard is the radar altimeter for precise measurements above terrain at low altitude.

Incorrect. They've got weather RADAR; think of a PPI, most likely a Collins WXR-2100 MultiScan if it was a 400ER.

Airliners do not navigate by radar.

They do indeed use weather radar to navigate around weather and to detect and avoid turbulence.

Why do so many Kiwis hate Yanks so much?

As a Kiwi I can assure you this is a myth, just as "All Americans love America" is a myth.

A survey was done in NZ at the beginning of last year which found that 40% of New Zealanders wanted closer ties with the US, and that's not "keeping the status quo", but- closer ties.

Good to see this co-operation in the skies.

Thank you for your reply. I worked with a few Kiwis several years ago in Tokyo and considered them friends, very smart, and funny as hell. However, most of the lot I encountered in Hong Kong, London, and OZ were rather hostile towards the US in many of their comments. Not so much towards me but if you asked them they would have told you Reagan was the devil, George H was his spawn, and Americans are their minions. Fwiw, Ive kicked myself in the arse many times for not going to NZ when I was in Australia. I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever get down to that part of the globe again.
