CNN’s Campbell Brown Rips ‘Double Standard’ on Palin Clothing
Newsbusters ^ | 10-23-08 | Balen

CNN anchor Campbell Brown led her Election Center program on Wednesday with a critique of the “double standard” concerning the recent attention on the $150,000 that the Republican National Committee spent on vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin: “My issue: there is an incredible double standard here, and we're ignoring a very simple reality. Women are judged based on their appearance far, far more than men. This is a statement of fact. There has been plenty of talk and plenty written about Sarah Palin’s jackets, her hair, her looks....Compare that to the attention given to Barack Obama’s $1,500 suits or John McCain’s $520 Ferragamo shoes. There is no comparison.”

Brown spent more than 2 minutes on the matter, in which she related her own experience of how women “get scrutinized based on appearance” much more than men do: “...I speak from experience here. When I wear a bad outfit on the air, I get viewer e-mail complaining about it, a lot of e-mail, seriously. When Wolf Blitzer wears a not-so-great tie, how much e-mail do you think he gets? My point is, for women, unfortunately, appearance is part of the job. If Wolf or Anderson shows up on the air without makeup, do you think you would even notice? I show up on the air without makeup, trust me, you’ll notice.” The CNN anchor then defended the RNC’s efforts to help Palin appear visually good: “All women in the public eye deal with this issue, and it’s for this reason that I think the RNC should help Palin pay for hair, clothes, and makeup. It is part of the job.” She concluded her commentary by labeling the attention on Palin’s clothing a “peripheral issue” in the presidential campaign.

Maybe Campbell Brown should shop somewhere other than the Salvation Army.

Rush was talking about this today, it seems that most celebrities don’t have to buy clothes, Hillary included, because they make a fashion statement for the designer.
As for CB, she is so in the tank for the Dems that I refuse to watch her anymore.

Just visted Limbaugh’s site “Republicans will spend thousands to get women into their clothes, while Democrats spend thousands to get women out of their clothes.

How much was spent on Biden’s (bad) hair plugs, Botox, face lift, and capped teeth?

>>>>>I disagree....

Okay! Its not a big issue, for sure.

But at this time, the McCain camapaign doesn't need to hand the enemy anymore ammunition then they already have. That was my point.

Unfortunately, she’s right. Women are judged on a standard different than men. Not only in politics.

BUT it’s also because she’s a conservative pro-life Republican.

Its already an issue. I didn't make it that way, however. When you're attempting to appeal to mainstreet independents and undecideds, you don't need to have an issue like this come up. Elitism isn't pretty no matter who is the subject matter.

>>>>>Why don’t you ask Mrs. Reagan Man’s opinion of this issue.

She is no longer with us.

Women are judged based on their appearance far, far more than men.

Given a choice of nicely tailored inexpensive apparel or stylish, trendy clothes that are very expensive which do you think Campbell would opt for? I'd like to know what her annual clothing budget is. Probably more than most people earn.

Is the sky falling? I can’t believe I am agreeing with Campbell Brown. When this dumb story came up on the news, I told my wife that if Sarah were a man, there would be no mention because a man can wear the same blue suit every day without criticism. However, if a woman is seen in the same suit twice while campaigning, there are lots of negative comments.

Sarah can’t win. If she buys lots of outfits, she gets criticized. If she wears the same dress more than once, she gets criticized. Just the left wing media doing their usual Sarah ranting.

ironically, campbell brown is married to republican and fmr Bush spokesman Dan Senor, who was the top press guy in Iraq for a while, and is strongly pro-Israel and conservative. you’d think he’d have educated her more. You’d think maybe she’d have a more open point of view.

I do think a number of women like Palin even if they prefer Obama for President. Also, in the MSM it’s very tough to come out like that. You really have to kee pit hidden or your career is in jeopardy.

But I do think a lot of women notice this and get fed up. It’s tough for Palin because she’s conservative and all. If she was a liberal dem like Hillary all the women would be supporting her just like they did Hillary. We don’t need all of them to win, though. Even a few % would be a greta help.

The thing is, Palin looks great in anything. The best picture I’ve seen of her or one of them at least is of her in cargo pants and a vintage t shirt that couldn’t have cost more than $50 combined. Now cargo pants and a tshirt isnt exactly vp material, but i think it projects a realness that only helps. Who knows? Maybe having her campaign for a day or two in more casual stuff would be a help.

I’m sorry for your loss. I wouldn’t have said what I asked had I known.

I don’t watch much TV at all, but I’m pretty sure Brown is a democrat and she appears to be siding with Palin and the RNC here. This could be a first for her given the PDS that we usually get from the media.

If this story is still in next weeks news, then I’ll agree with you that it’s a problem that Sarah didn’t buy all her clothes at Walmart. However, if its dropped, I’ll assume that the MSM feels that this issue hurts obama more with getting votes than it helps.

Knock me over with a feather!!!
Campbell Brown of all people coming to Sarah’s defense??

Maybe she will see the light of the hypocrisy of her media mates who cannot find Nobama’s birth certificate an issue, but can hammer at how Sarah obtains her clothes.

If I won the lottery, I would gladly pay for her clothes.

I’m waiting for a really cold day for a campaign appearance when Sarah and Todd show up in their snowmobile suits. She can tell them “these are my clothes and I paid for them”....
