Thank you! Accurate information is so very difficult to find, on any subject. We are fortunate to have Free Republic!

Um they could be the 60st, depending on the obama math.
i’m not sure if he said that he’d been to 57, but there were a couple he hadn’t been to yet, so that would be 59. 59 + 1 = 60.

I didn’t know that iceland was socialist. I just liked to look at the pictures in the national geographic. :)

When the Russian loan negotiations went ahead, the Icelandic Prime Minister said something about how now Iceland would be able to be in agreement with Russia’s interests in the Arctic.

It sounded like an immediate and significant power shift.

The British using anti-terrorism legislation to grab Iceland’s assets is pathetic. They are not terrorists. And Brits who invest their money abroad do so at their own risk. Everyone knows that foreign investments have a risk attached, because if banks fail govts will bail out their own citizens, not foreigners (except the US recently, and that is another story.)

So, everyone should just write a check for $65k on those vaporized Icelandic bank accounts.... /sarcasm

Sounds like a horrid situation. Best wishes to the Icelandic folk and everyone else in the world dealing with financial turmoil.

China has quite a few muslims — probably in the range of 50 to 150 million: both Hui and Turkestanis. Iceland only has a population of 230,000

I'd questioned whether it was wise for the USA to abandon Iceland's NATO airbase, and now we may wake up and discover that the answer is a resounding 'no' -- who needs Russian bombers re-fuelling in the North Atlantic (well the Russians do, of course, but why should we want it?). We left Iceland sitting there wide open for Russian enticements and adventurism:

Looking at a map, one sees that an air base in Iceland allows one to interdict traffic between the US and Europe.

One of Tom Clancy's early novels, "Red Storm Rising", was about the US and the USSR getting into a conventional shooting war over access to Middle East oil. One of the first things the USSR did was to invade Iceland, and install a bomber base there. From there, bombers equipped with anti-ship missiles were able to take out Atlantic shipping.
