Covering Palin, refusing to hit the Dems on Freddie/Fanny/Frank money, why is McCain basically running not to win?

Could the reason why Senators are all so congenial to each other, that they've all been in DC for so long that they all know where each others skeletons are buried?

Perhaps, and then there are the gold-old beltway boys (like George Will, for example)  who don't think she belongs.
