There was also Biden's accusation that John McCain is soft on regulation, when in fact he tried to beef up regulations on Fannie Mae and Freddie Macan explanation for why he got so little campaign money from Fannie and Freddie over the yearsunder $22,000as opposed to the more than $126,000 Obama received in his short time in the Senate. Recent scuttlebutt says that this financial crisis was timed to make the Republican's look bad so that the Democrats can win big in November. I now think, however, that the crisis was a huge surprise for the Democrats. They have been collecting big payoffs so that they could sweep the whole thing under the rug after the election. With a month to go before the election, even this week's passage of the bailout bill may not be able to accomplish the cover-up.

(Obama can act presidential. McCain should be President.)

I totally agree! I think they knew there was going to be a crash, but they wanted to put it off until they had “the One” in office to help them cover their tracks. I think it caught them up short—by about a month. Perhaps that is one reason they, and their media cohorts, had pulled out all the stops to win this particular election.
If you recall Reid's response when he first heard about the crisis, he sounded as befuddled as anyone. His response was, to paraphrase, “I don't know what we're going to do, we're in completely uncharted waters here”.
