With John McCain to name his vice president on Friday, the smoke signals from the Republican Party are spelling out the name of Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Could Kay Bailey Hutchison pick up women's votes for McCain?
Once a long shot, she is apparently getting a boost from conservatives who see an opening to hoover up the women's vote after Barack Obama left Hillary Clinton and Kathleen Sebelius on the shelf.
Hutchison, 66, who is due to address the Republican convention in the Twin Cities next Wednesday, is seen as both a safe and a bold move for Mr McCain. Safe because she is vastly experienced; bold because she would be the first Republican woman on a national ticket.
Dick Morris, the former Clinton aide, wrote: "She's been around for decades and is not going to start making mistakes now. Her nomination would be a signal to American women that McCain takes their aspirations seriously, even if Obama does not."

So do Republicans.
Republicans fear McCain will pick the wrong person as his running mate.
Pullin’ for Palin, pal!
why would McCain do what he knows Obama thought he would do after Obama passed on a woman.
Sheese. These people that write this garbage about what Democrats are thinking better not ever play chess.
No we don’t fear he may pick the wrong candidate.
We fear that the hysteria being spead by Democrats trying to push McCain into chosing a woman so they can say he is a panderer is being listened to by a few media hypes and a few so called Republicans.
Can he put a dress on Cheney and pick him?
And how will the MSM belittle her if he does pick a woman!
Then Susan Estrich will talk about how terrible her outfits are and how she looks like a make upped whore, etc...
Hmmmm, Laz might have fun with that, if he was still here..............
Hell, not as much as I fear it.
All the way....with Kay.
I’d love to see KBH as VEEP.
Hutchinson is the wrong person. She supports Amnesty for Illegals.
Not buyin’ it. The MSM would luv a woman pick; then go out and hammer McCain for the condecending slap at women for the faux Hillary. Plus endless stories of how pissed off Hillary supporters are; why, they’re back in the Obama camp now....
That dude has some small hands.
I like her ... but too really old people running? I don;t know.
The big mistake here, as in many such attempts, is to see a political strategy to the selection.
Sometimes, and hopefully this time, the person making the VP selection is looking for the best future prospect for the country. Someone who can lead, who is loyal and who brings the personality characteristic of sincerity as a given.
By not trying to understand Senator McCain and attempting to make a practical political decision, this author and others like him miss the basis of the decision making process.
