Judicial Watch Launches Investigation of Effort to Intimidate Conservatives

Threat Letters by Liberal Group May Violate Ku Klux Klan Act

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it is launching an investigation into a nationwide effort by a liberal activist group to intimidate supporters of Republican and conservative causes. According the August 8 edition of The New York Times, Accountable America, a liberal group, plans to send a letter “to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions…The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.

"The group is also hoping to be able to respond if an outside conservative group broadcasts a television advertisement attacking Senator Barack Obama, or another Democratic candidate, by running commercials exposing the donors behind the advertisements.”

Attempts to intimidate individuals from participating in the presidential campaign can be a violation of federal law. A key federal civil rights law (42 U.S.C. § 1985(3)), popularly known as the Ku Klux Klan Act, may be applicable if “two or more persons conspire to prevent by force, intimidation, or threat, any citizen who is lawfully entitled to vote, from giving his support or advocacy in a legal manner, toward or in favor of the election of any lawfully qualified person as an elector for President or Vice President, or as a Member of Congress of the United States; or to injure any citizen in person or property on account of such support or advocacy.”

“Threats and intimidation have no place in our democratic elections and are a violation of the law. This new front group, Accountable America, seems have crossed a legal line,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

It's rather ironic that a group of Obama supporters could be prosecuted under the Ku Klux Klan Act.

This is a serious matter that touches more than just the big money donors and groups like Freedom's Watch. The Democrats are trying intimidate all of us into silence.

Remember in 2004 how they went after Swift Boat Veterans like Terry Gardner and shut down Carlton Sherwood's movie about Kerry.

They also threatened the broadcast license of Sinclair over the Kerry movie and ABC's over The Path to 9/11.

The players at Accountable America worked for MoveOn and Hillary Clinton. They need to be held accountable if what they are doing is indeed a for violation of Americans' civil rights.

This is an excellent way to counter the rhetorical thug-like behavior by left/liberal groups, but does our current U.S. Justice Department have the ‘nads to actually do something about it?

Pardon me while I don’t hold my breath.

I’m glad JW went after them. When I heard this earlier this morning. I knew somehow it had to be illegal. Glad they found the Act that proves it

Nothing will happen. Like the law’s name says, it wasn’t passed to put liberals in jail.

They’re trying to make the meaning of Swift Boat a “lie” instead of the truth it actually means. But this is like Marxist. That’s their goal....CHANGE everything

Kerry was swift boated with the truth otherwise he would have went through with a lawsuit. LOL

Good news: Dems may be caught in a serious violation of the law.

Bad news: Judicial Watch has something to do with bringing them to justice.

It's rather ironic that a group of Obama supporters could be prosecuted under the Ku Klux Klan Act.

Didn't Obama endorse and support Robert C Byrd, D-West Virginia? The same one who was a kleagle AND an exalted cyclops in the KKK? (well they got the cyclops part right)

The one who said there are black n's and white n's...just seven years ago?

The one who said,in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944, "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds"?

This racist fool is, as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, third in the line of presidential succession, behind VP Cheney and Nine Percent Nancy...

...and they say that Republicans are the racists...oy...

Hope you're doing well today, Kristinn. It's been a heck of a week. But then, isn't every week here at FR?

Like the law’s name says, it wasn’t passed to put liberals in jail.

I was thinking just the opposite, actually. The law's name sounds like it would be perfect for putting democrats in jail. Now, democrats may have stopped supporting the Klan, but they have never risen above using the same old disgusting tactics.

It kind of reminds me of the intimidation that the Taylor supporters were giving to the Smith supporters in the movie ( Mr. Smith goes to Washington ).
