Did I Mention He's Black? -- Obama makes a play for the white-guilt vote
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 23, 2008 | James Taranto

Posted on 06/23/2008 1:41:50 PM PDT by Zakeet

"Barack Obama told a group of Florida donors Friday night that Republicans will try to make voters afraid of him, and suggested they would use his race to scare up votes for John McCain," Fox News reports.

"We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid," Obama said at the fundraiser. "They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black? He's got a feisty wife."

This is a very clever bit of rhetoric. For one thing, note how Obama conflates the entirely legitimate concern over his inexperience with prejudice against his race or "funny name." If you vote against him because he's green, you might as well be voting against him because he's black.

For another, Obama is baselessly accusing Republicans of racial prejudice, or at least of cynically pandering to racial prejudice. But by wording this "accusation" as a prediction, Obama is able to cast aspersions without needing any evidence to back them up. He implicitly ascribes to the GOP the view that voters are prejudiced against blacks, then calls on voters to prove they are not by voting for Obama.

A journalistic effort in the same direction appeared in the Washington Post over the weekend. The Post suggests that there has been a backlash against the Obama candidacy in the form of "an increase in racist and white supremacist activity, mainly on the Internet." ... The Post, however, acknowledges that there is very little evidence for this claim:

I hope it works out at least as well for him as did John Kerry’s service in Viet Nam.

What makes me fear Obama is not his color. It is who and what he is. It is his disdain for America and everything this Nation was founded on. It is his extreme left even socialist intentions and agenda.
What makes me fear Obama is my love of my Country and desire for it to continue and be the very best it can be..
No Republican or anyone else need say or do anything. I only need to listen to Obama speak. To read and understand his history.

If Obama is making a play for white liberal guilt at this stage in the campaign, his independent and private polls must be telling him something he doesn't want to hear.

I just heard Dennis Miller on the radio saying that he's put off by Obama playing the race card when no one else is. He (correctly) points out that McCain has never mentioned race during the campaign and, indeed, stepped in to censor a local republican ad depicting Jerry Wright in less than flattering light in a political ad in NC during the campaign. As post #3 points out, I guess we're supposed to feel guilty about him being black. Sorry, BO, that swings absolutely no weight with me so you'll have to fabricate some other bogus argument...this one's not going to fly with any person who is capable of thinking.

No guilt here... I still am writing in Duncan Hunter for President...I made that decision long before BO got the nomination..unless Hillary up sets him some how..I am sure she is still trying to figure out how.

I posted this about 2 1/2 months ago at Free Republic (hit link scroll down to post no. 8)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1999041/posts

Here is the pertinent part of the referenced post including the time stamp.

“Obama is getting ready for McCain.

His whole campaign is going to be about race.

He is framing the ‘argument’ that to even ‘bring up’ his racial makeup will be tantamount to racism!

This will also be framed to include his Muslim roots, his ties to Africa, and other various stuff.

Mark my words.”

Seems to me the only one bringing up race in this campaign is obama.

This guy is revealing himself to be more vile and more despicable with each passing day. “A feisty wife.” How about a whiney , racist wife who hates America? Obama, having used race to win the primaries, now plans to play the race card at the national level.
Playing the racial victim is a distraction from the “issues” Obama would rather not have us think about: he would not let America drill for oil; he would provide treasonous shyster lawyers for Khalid Sheikh Muhammed and Co;he would not monitor terrorist phone calls; he would destroy the economy through predatory taxation; he would send American GIs to be tried by the America-hating socialists of the International criminal court. A real sweetheart.

Whenever the city of Boston was looking for a new Police Commissioner or Superintendant of Schools, the Council or Committee would say they are looking for the most qualified candidate and some crank would say “there you White people go again, talking about qualifications.” I kid you not, I rememeber that quote. I think it was Mel King.

I think you're supposed to feel guilty that the Civil War was not fought sooner, and that some white people were left alive after it was over, thereby preventing the surviving slaves from turning America into a paradise like Zimbabwe or South Africa. Or Gabon. Or Bourkina Fasso. Or Ethiopia. Or Uganda.
