Two people were hospitalized after being shot Saturday afternoon at the Juneteenth celebration in Theodore Wirth Park.

Mike Kinghorn, 23, was shot in the ankle and an unidentified female was shot in the leg. Neither person was expected to be in the hospital very long.

The shooting happened just after 5:30 p.m.

OK, sorry. I plead ignorance.

I just looked “Juneteeth” up on Wikipedia and found that it’s apparently gone national.

Terrible holiday. . . where I grew up it was just an excuse for certain folks to get drunk. Don’t get me wrong: emancipation is certainly cause for celebration — but it took TWO YEARS for slaves in Texas to find out they were free! I think I’d be aggravated.

Whatever — you learn something new every day.

It didn’t take them 2 years to find out they were free.....it took 2 more years for the Fed.gov to WIN THE CIVIL WAR and set them free! Declarations of “RIGHTS” mean NOTHING before they can exercise them in a practical sense.

Damn. I can't believe that I missed Juneteenth.

I always wish my brother "HAPPY JUNETEENTH" as a gag.

It's a tradition that has withstood numerous military deployments (usually both of us deployed at the same time, but with different branches). Now, for once, neither of us are deployed and I forget my annual "HAPPY JUNETEENTH" email. I'm slippin'.

If you think that my gag "HAPPY JUNETEENTH" emails are bad, you should have seen when I sent Kwanzaa cards out one year.

The responses to both are the same: "WTF?"

LOL. I love to poke fun at BS holidays.

As a Texan, I want to know what the heck folks in Minneapolis are doing celebrating Juneteenth. ‘Tain’t their holiday.

Any excuse for a party, I guess.

Or an excuse to make money, lol.

Growing up in Texas, juneteenth ALWAYS had a number of shootins and stobins. Nothing like killing your own kind celebrating freedom. Won’t it be great when the ossamma obbamaites are running things? Move over Rhodesia, here comes Amerika.

Junteenth happened in TEXAS. I don’t understand Blacks in other states celebrating it. They’re trying to make it a national holiday. Ridiculous!!!

The Declaration of Independence happened in PENNSYLVANIA. I don't understand Whites in other states celebrating it...

I’m sure you really understand the difference and are just messin’ with us, right?

What happened in Pennsylvania didn’t stay in Pennsylvania. It affected everyone in every colony.

What happened on the original Juneteenth in Galveston was specific to Texas slaves, not folks in other states. It has been a rather odd but interesting Texas black holiday ever since. Why other states would adopt it, other than ill-conceived efforts to be “diverse,” is beyond me.

It’s a little bit like your family celebrating your neighbor’s birthday with a party, while he’s having his own party at his own house. Kind of like you’re jealous and want to be included, but didn’t get invited.
