Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 06/18/2008 Pelosi Statement on Bush Call for End to Ban on Offshore Oil Drilling

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in reaction to the President’s comments at the White House urging Congress to end a federal ban on offshore oil drilling and open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil exploration:

“Oil companies are sitting on 68 million acres of public lands they have already leased, but President Bush and Senator McCain want to award them with even more.

“Americans are suffering under the Bush-Cheney-McCain policies that were written by Big Oil: $4 a gallon gasoline; $134 per barrel oil; increased reliance on foreign sources of energy and on hydrocarbons that contribute to climate change.

“Americans use one quarter of the world’s oil consumption every day and we possess less than 2 percent of the world’s supply. We cannot drill our way to energy independence.

“Our nation must move toward a new, cleaner, and more affordable energy future that focuses on renewable and increased energy efficiency. The New Direction Congress has already passed innovative energy legislation and will continue to develop other proposals to address high energy costs and shift our nation to a more energy efficient economy.

“We look forward to having a President in the White House whose energy policy can no longer be described as ‘drill and veto.’”

There is a push to expand drilling in Sespe, a CA protected area, and the lawyers have already tied it up in court. I want to know how many projects have been similarly stalled in those 68 million acres leased. Want to bet it mind boggling?

Exactly, its rather mind boggling to accuse big oil of “not” wanting to drill without giving a reason. Of course little the rats do makes sense anyway.

Demon'Rats all bluster no solutions. Attack the problem on multiple levels.

1. Drill for MORE oil

2. Get some nuclear power plants online

3. Develop Hydrogen, Biodiesel, Windpower, Solar

4. Mine for some clean burning coal

5. Contract with Iraq to sell us oil cheap

Demon'Rats are not Progressives...they are the new Neanderthals!

Brilliant post! This is the answer, do it all!

They might counter some of it but not all, there will be a time when they will have to give in and we will win if we are vigilant.

Both GW and McCain are helping now we should encourage them to keep it up.

If it is going to take 10 years,
shouldn't we get started?

Drill here, drill now, pay less

I can't add anything more than what has been said already - so this will be mostly a repeat...

Actively go out to develop our known energy resources -- and the existing oil prices will drop like a rock. Not only due to speculators selling their positions to lock up their profits, but also due to OPEC trying to discourage the development of non-OPEC resources. This happened in the 80s. The United States made some noise about bringing some more Nuclear plants on-line, and the oil prices dropped. Bringing Nukes on-line didn't seem so compelling, so those plans were [regretfully] dropped.

Drill Anwar.
Drill off-shore.
Open up those clean coal mines in Utah (which President Clinton took off-line as a gift to his buddies in Indonesia).
Build the Nukes.

Yes, it might take 5 to 10 years to reap the benefits (actually I bet we start seeing price benefits within months) -- but that is no reason to sit on our hands and wait for some Photovoltaic or Hydrogen Cell breakthrough. If they happen - great. Just don't hold your breath waiting for it.

We have a problem, we have the ability to fix it. Just not the leadership (or to put it more correctly -- a Congressional leadership that really does not want to fix the problem. I believe they'd be happy to see an economically crippled America dependent on the largess of our Government overlords).

I would like the oil company CEO’s to walk into congress with every single one of those leases for the 68 million acres and say, “here, we don’t want them anymore, you figure out where the oil is, and YOU drill for it....see ya.”

No Speaker Pelosi, Americans are suffering because you and your like-minded liberal cohorts have consistently BLOCKED the Bush-Cheney policies of responsible oil production in parallel with private sector (read effective) alternative energy research.

Gas prices are high and going higher precisely because YOU Speaker Pelosi have done NOTHING but block responsible energy policy.

Phone calls and emails won’t fix anything. The system is broken. They already know that many of us hate their gut’s.

And what the heck does that have to do with anything, Pelosi?!

Just because the oil company 'leased' the land doesn't mean they FOUND oil there, you idiot! (not you Sub-Driver)

I sent her an email asking her to please reconsider since it is what is best for the country and would be best for her and her party too. The problem is that they all have this idea that “big oil” (a misnomer in itself) has a ton of land leases that it refuses to develop because it is happy with high prices. That is so far from the truth but that is the lie that they are telling their constituents and others. The reason why the oil companies do not drill on a lot of the leases they hold is because there isn’t enough oil there to make it worth the cost of drilling. Or the type of oil there requires more expensive means of extraction that keeps it from being feasible. Just because there is land with some oil, doesn’t mean that it is worth drilling there. The left is also making big noise about that issue with China being a lie. I don’t believe it is a lie. I believe that there is nothing being done yet—but it will be. I feel like I am making no progress.

Thanks Rod but the list is not so brilliant...it’s just common sense and a to do list. It’s not hard but idiots in DC can’t figure it out or refuse to act. We need to act and toss these morons to the curb for causing us needless turmoil.

My guess is all of them. The reason it takes 10 years too get anything done is because of the pathetic Govt regulator system married to the trust fund babies "enivormenat lawsuits" designed to do nothing but delay and obstruct the process. One of the reasons we need loser pays. Make these "Green" groups bleed dollars ever time they file one of these garbage lawsuits.
