“Michael Steele of Maryland”

Steele was a loser in his home state. Just WHAT do you suggest he will contribute to the ticket, except [of course], “color”?

Memo to Mr. McCain:
This election _IS_ going to be “about color”, regardless of how distasteful that may seem to you (and to some here in this forum).

Since it is going to be that, you had best define your OWN “color”, and gender as well. Those who are disinclined to vote for a “person of color” or a “person of gender” already lean towards McCain. It would be insanity to risk losing their votes by demonstrating how “egalitarian” the party is by deliberately choosing someone who “doesn’t look like themselves”, regardless of experience or qualifications.

McCain should chose a white guy. It’s that simple.
A younger, but still experienced, white guy.
This is going to get the votes of the many “white guys” out there who are independent or even registered democrats - who don’t want to vote for Obama.

The WORST possible thing McCain could do would be to choose a black running mate, regardless of gender. It will reek as raw pandering and tokenism, and gain NO votes - not one. Blacks are going to be voting for Obama, anyway, at numbers which I predict will approach 95%. I predict that even 30-50% of _registered Republican_ blacks will vote for Obama. Wait and see.

I could write Obama’s campaign exhortation if the Pubbies run a black in the VP spot: “why vote for them? They put THEIR black guy in the back of the bus! Vote for me, and I’ll be the guy DRIVING that bus!”

Hadn't thought of it from that angle. John McCain and Token Black '08, huh? I was thinking more along the lines of JC Watts simply being a good conservative candidate, and that he could counter Obama's black victicrat/liberation crap pretty convincingly and from a position of authority. But you're probably right.

I like Steele because of his positions, not color.

He lost in Maryland because Maryland had jumped off the deep end of liberalism. Montgomery County “We're queer and we're here” school policies are evident of that. I see no reason to view him as damaged goods.

You seem fixated on color. You might want to examine yourself on that.

How about a list of your three running mates based on their conservatism rather than color?
