That is rather synical.
I don’t believe it is oportunistic. More likely he will cause colleagues to start doubting his intelligence.
Besides, there is little money in books unless you can sell millions like Ann Coulter. For most books, if the money was divided by the hours to write the book, the pay would be rather poor.
Books result mostly because people have an insight to a subject and get the urge to tell everyone about it.
