Political correctness run amok. Although it is rather an odd cover for a golf magazine.

Golfweek issues apology

Jan. 18, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jeff Babineau has been named editor of Golfweek, replacing Dave Seanor, effective immediately.

The change has been made after Golfweek ran a cover in the January 19 issue showing a noose to illustrate a controversial comment by Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman about Tiger Woods.

“We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country,” said William P. Kupper Jr., president of Turnstile Publishing Co., the parent company of Golfweek. “We were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.”

Golfweek devoted four pages of news and commentary on the Tilghman/Golf Channel situation. Tilghman was suspended for two weeks as a result of her comment.

Babineau, 45, has been with Golfweek for nine years, and has filled a number of roles with the magazine, including editor, deputy editor and senior writer. In his new role, he will report directly to Kupper.

“We know we have a job ahead of us to re-earn the trust and confidence of many loyal readers,” Babineau said. “Our staff is very passionate about the game. Our wish is that one regretful error does not erase more than 30 years of service we’ve dedicated to this industry.”

I guess he was trying to spice things up a little bit. Golf itself is so damn uninteresting.

In 1902 a miscreant threw a rock at an innocent black man. Be careful how you use the word rock from now on.

Oh no. Tiger is between a rock and a hard place.

YERRRRR OUTA HERE!!

Here’s what bothers me.

The noose cover was tasteless and isn’t really about golf which is what the magazine purports to cover.

However, I wouldn’t even know about this cover if ESPN, CNN and the other news channels weren’t displaying it for the past 24 hours. If the purpose of a magazine cover is to draw attention and attract buyers, the editor did his job. He also illustrated Ms. Tilghman’ comments a bit too well.

If the editor is somehow guilty of racism, then isn’t CNN, ESPN, etc. just as guilty for flashing the GolfWeek cover ad nauseum to viewers everywhere, increasing the exposure this cover received at least 50-fold?

Why are CNN and ESPN able to exploit racism but the editor of GolfWeek is not?

Flunkie #1: We should cover that ESPN babe getting flak for the "lynch" comment.
Flunkie #2: Yeah, that was extremely insensitive; mentioning a lynching as a way of getting even with a black man.
Flunkie #1: For sure, dude. A really clown move. But maybe we could take her side and show how she's being overly criticized by the PC crowd.
Flunkie #2: Yeah, they really hung her out to dry. Hey! We could show a noose on the cover - that refers to the original lynching, but it also refers to all the brouhaha about the babe!
Flunkie #1: Whaddya think, boss?

Boss Editor: Yeah, that's a great idea, really clever.

This reactions are absurd. It is not like the editor was promoting racism. O am sick of political correctness.

Everything can be taken out of context. Why not throw a fit over Macy's Red Star? But, of course, a Communist symbol is okay.

Will the noose eventually become "N-word"? But we already have "N-word." So it might have to be "the N2-word."

It’s all right, just remember not to use the terms ‘master’ and ‘slave’ when referring to computer equipment. You and every teacher in the country already know about the ban on the word ‘niggardly’, don’t you.

I have a subscription. I went to the mailbox yesterday, opened it up to find this week's issue, and began to crack up laughing. This has gotten way overblown. I don't necessarily like Kelly's broadcast abilities, but this has become ridiculous. I guess this is her 'Fuzzy Zoeller Moment' ........
