Huckabee: 'I Feel Like Seabiscuit'

Many Americans like to know that the underdog can win, Mike Huckabee said on Friday morning, fresh off his first-place showing in the Iowa Republican caucuses.

Huckabee joked about being the "Seabiscuit" candidate, a reference the thoroughbred race horse that defeated a Triple Crown champion in 1938 after a lackluster start to his career.

In an interview on "Fox & Friends" Friday, Huckabee said people are connecting to his campaign "because I'm talking about how to make America better." He said he won't change what he's doing because it's working.

The Limbaugh factor

Asked about Rush Limbaugh's comments that Huckabee is not a true Ronald Reagan conservative, Huckabee responded that he was an early supporter of Ronald Reagan when Reagan ranked last in the polls.

Limbaugh called Fox News Thursday night, saying Huckabee doesn't have "Reagan credentials" and that very few of the Republican candidates do.) Huckabee said he finds the criticism "ridiculous."

>> I like what I hear... it seems to me he is being VERY CLEAR

Yes, his lies are coming through loud and clear!

The reality of the Huckster, as revealed by his actions, is somewhat different than what he says in the heat of the campaign.

I might consider it if Huck was a conservative. He isn’t.

Do people on this site really no longer know what a conservative is?

Does anyone think Huckabee will be strong amongst socially conservative, but otherwise not so conservative Catholics?

It's a harder group to peg than the evangelicals, but I think the support for Huckabee will be lower among Catholics - at least in the primaries. If there's another pro-life candidate, the Catholic vote will be split on that factor alone. Also, it's a mistake to think that Catholics are not fiscal conservatives; I know many who evaluate candidates from that perspective.

Catholics won't hear an endorsement of Huckabee from their parish priests, either. It's more common to hear a brief but pointed reminder not to support any pro-abortion candidates. FWIW...

The question is: Who is the jockey riding this mindless organism in the race?

Mike Huckabee is part of the “religious left” or “religious socialist.” I do not understand why he is called a conservative. Nothing conservative about his plans for the US.

Huckabee: 'I Feel Like Seabiscuit'

That may be, but it's the conservative republicans who are saying "naaaaaaaayyyyyy ..."

Hey Huckster! Jesse Jackson is a Christian Minister too! I'd never vote for either of you.

In that case, I hope you never need to.

Personally, I'd have to vote for Rooty McRomnabee over any of the uber-lib Democrats. Then, I'd wonder if I was actually helping to prolong the agony, and delaying the conservative revolution.

Fred wanted to dance to his own tune; he danced yesterday to the melody of 13%.

Nearly twice what he was expected to get. Not bad for someone that faced assualts by the MSM (including FOX) all day long saying he was quitting and encouraging his supporters to go to McCain.

Yup you were right it was Huck.

I was having a ditzy moment.

That’s OK. I’m pretty much 100% ditzy before coffee in the AM.

Rudy and Mitt are also clear but you have to look at their record not their rhetoric.

This guy thinks because he’s a preacher he doesn’t deserve his record to be scrutinized.

It's more common to hear a brief but pointed reminder not to support any pro-abortion candidates.

In 40+ years I never heard that message. I did hear the anti-materialism homily once a week though. It was better to give to the church you see.

In 40+ years I never heard that message.

Admittedly, I've had the good fortune to live in a conservative archdiocese. Philip Hannan was Archbishop there for most of my lifetime (Google "Jumping Padre" + 101st Airborne + D-Day). Though retired, he still celebrated two Masses each weekend in New Orleans. At age 93, he packed the church with his no-(liberal)-nonsense homilies. After Katrina, he finally retired fully.

I miss his unapologetic and *very* politically incorrect manner - it was really an inspiration. It wasn't just the elderly Archbishop holding forth on the topic of abortion, though. I heard it from at least two younger priests in my former home parish.

Now I live in Texas, in a much smaller diocese. I'm waiting to see whether a similar "remember, the Church's position is..." sort of message surfaces before the primary.
