I disagree. I think that governments around the world have made it a 'national security issue' has resulted in much ill.

They have only made it an issue insofar as we’ve allowed over the past century (along with every other first world country) for our entire economic structure, from transportation to energy to be based on it. No matter what we feel now about how we should have structured things then, it is a reality now.
