DPS was watching burglars shot by Horn 10:16 PM CST on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 By Rucks Russell / 11 News Even before their deaths prompted a series of heated debates about the use of deadly force, detectives at the Department of Public Safety had their eye on Diego Ortiz and Miguel Dejesus.

The two were shot and killed by Joe Horn, a Pasadena man who thought they were burglarizing his neighbor’s home last month.

According to a DPS memo obtained by 11 News, the department was investigating the use of Puerto Rican birth certificates by Colombians seeking to obtain Texas driver’s licenses.

Both Ortiz and Dejesus had applied for licenses. Dejesus listed his country of origin as Puerto Rico, but both men were Colombian.

Apparently, the DPS is investigating hundreds of immigrants who may have used illegal papers to get Texas licenses.

But that’s not all.

A much wider probe has been launched into an organized syndicate of Colombians who are engaged in illegal weapons sales and home break-ins – just like the one Ortiz and Dejesus were involved in last month in Pasadena.

That day, Joe Horn and a shotgun stood in the way of the suspected thieves, but in many instances the suspects have gotten away.

The ATF, ICE and DPS have reportedly formed a task force to bring the crime wave to an end.

The burglars are said to be very effective at what they do, conducting extensive surveillance on their targets before striking. Some of the suspects are extremely violent.

The investigations have already led to several arrests.

How about that?

Looks like Mr. Horn’s shotgun was something of a spotlight. First I’ve read about this PR driver’s license scam, though I suspected it might be happening or would happen.

To whom are the Columbians selling weapons? Street criminals? Or, more sinister types?

Citizens are killed daily by illegals, both accidentally and intentionally. The neighbor could have been another statistic as those Colombians were up to no good, had robbery on their minds, and were carrying something that could be used as a weapon to harm their victim. They were as armed as if they had a loaded gun. They died, but it looks like a greater tragedy was averted.

Like the border guards whose "victim" got immunity, only to commit another crime, we need a separate set of laws for illegals who commit crimes.

Let all armed intruders obfuscated identities be sorted out in the morgue while reporters refrain from crying “racism” when homeowners only see thugs invading their homes.

A worthy article, thanks for posting.

But...use the actual article title to avoid reposts (FR rules!).

Such actual titles will also avoid embarrassing grammar errors.

To wit: Were burglars killed by neighbor in U.S. illegally?
implies that the neighbor was in the U.S. illegally.

What you *meant* to say was “Were burglars in U.S. illegally who were killed by neighbor?

Say it that way and it’s clear that the *burglars* were in the U.S. illegally.

It looks as if Joe Horn was just doing what Jorge Arbusto is just unwilling to do.

Protect these United States from the invasion from a foreign power.

I’d say a phony driver’s license is the least of these dead criminal’s problems.

As a general rule, I don’t like seeing someone killed over property. In this instance it’s beginning to look like foreign nationals have been preying on U.S. Citizens because our laws protect them. What’s the worst that could happen? They spend a few years in jail after making thier bosses huge sums of money. Well, I was raised to believe that crime doesn’t pay. And perhaps it’s time to take the gloves off and let criminals know that we’re note screwing around with them any longer.

If you want to risk your life trying to steal other people’s property, then you’ve have made the decision. If you wind up dead, it was your choice.

I have a rule of thumb when it comes to people shot during home invasion robberies or simple burglaries. If the criminal had stayed away, they would not have faced a violent outcome. The home owner or his neighbors didn’t go looking for someone to kill. The criminals chose to invade other peoples property to steal the fruits of their labor, and as part of that decision, they accepted that they would have to pay a stiff penalty if caught. Well, these two did pay.

If you have criminal leanings, go ahead and try to rip people off. Just be aware that you may not live to see the next day. After making that decison, I think the criminal is fair game. Shoot the MoFos and don’t look back.

Get the pooper scooper out and dispose of the human waste. It’s been open season on law abiding citizens for decades. It’s time that came to an end.

I will say that folks should be very careful about who they gun down. If a well meaning person ends the life of an innocent, they should face a hell of a sentence for having done so.

I understand what you are saying, MHT, but I disagree somewhat with the “accidental” deaths to Americans. You are referring to, I think, drunk driving? I don’t see that as an accident. Unintentional perhaps, but not accidental. They, I assume, are not just walking down the street and alcohol accidentally somehow gets into their system. They know it is illegal to drink and drive and they understand the risks when they drink alcohol and get behind the wheel. What it is murder in my view and at least manslaughter.

I have seen your posts, I know you are on the right side and just wanted to point that out. 9000 Americans are killed by illegals every year. That is as many Americans as were killed on 9-11 and in the Iraq war combined. The pundits who say, “candidate X is good on terror, he gets it” need to ask the loved ones of these 9000 if they feel terrorized. Whether a splodeydope or an illegal invader, either has equal potential for harm to American Citizens. We need leaders who will identify, engage and then defeat, both.

“I don’t like seeing someone killed over property.”

Not many people do, but, I have very few high value items, my cameras are about it, for me. On my fixed retirement income, each of them represents many months of scrimping and saving. They aren’t insured, except by Smith & Wesson.
Try to burglarize my home and I will damn sure shoot you.
People who do things like this have no sympathy, and no respect, for anyone else, and they get none from me.

Was the neighbor in the U. S. illegally or were the burglars in the U. S. illegally. The headline reads as if the neighbor was in the U. S. illegally.

I'll bet on mosques haveing well stocked armories with lots of AK47s etc., and the local imans haveing smaller gun-rooms.

I know where you’re coming from, and I don’t blame you a bit.

Life is too short to wait years before you can replace what some low-life steals from you. And then you don’t know that they won’t do it again.

To heck with them.

Well yeah, that kind of goes along with this violent, illegal invasion of our country.

That is the value they put on their own lives. They risked their life for some used goods, sold cheap. Men that value living, so low, and that enter a Texas home, to steal, are very dangerous. This wasn’t a teenage mother stealing to eat and feed her kids. These were professional losers. Home invaders. We may well find that they have raped and murdered people that they discovered in those peoples homes. They made a trade, and lost.
