Those folks at the Max Planck Institute have been doing some really groundbreaking ancient DNA research!
Good stuff.

I think this is not a new idea.
I think I have read this many years ago.

Members of the species Homo Sapien have red hair;
Neanderthals are Homo Sapiens, from all of the research that I have seen;
Therefore, it is not surprising to find out that Neanderthals had (have?) red hair.

Aside from being about Neanderthals, this is old news. The above picture of recreation of a Neanderthal child found in is from a Polish blog dated November 16, 2006. For those of you fluent in Polish, here is the link

For those of you who do not read Polish, here is an Earlier Scince blog from July 5, 2005 featuring the same child

So. It’s race memory that some of us fear and loathe Ronald McDonald. And didn’t Bozo have red tufts sprouting from his pasty, leprous white scalp?
Hmmm.

I guess this makes me part Neanderthal! :-)

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]
