Louisiana elects first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal became the nation's youngest governor and the first nonwhite to hold post in Louisiana since Reconstruction when he carried more than half the vote to defeat 11 opponents.

Jindal, the Republican 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, had 53 percent with 625,036 votes with about 92 percent of the vote tallied. It was more than enough to win Saturday's election outright and avoid a November 17 runoff.

"My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American Dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana," he said to cheers and applause at his victory party.

....

When he takes office in January, Jindal will become the nation's youngest governor in office. He pledged to fight corruption and rid the state of those "feeding at the public trough," revisiting a campaign theme.

"They can either go quietly or they can go loudly, but either way, they will go," he said, adding that he would call the Legislature into special session to address ethics reform.

I would think that this election of a republican blows to hell two liberal fairy tales -

1) The republicans are in trouble.

2) The rats will overwhelmingly win everywhere, or so say the propaganda polls.

It’s my firm belief that hillary will prove to be the new George McGovern of the 21st century.

I guess the smear a few months ago by the DNC, trying to divide Catholics and Protestants over Jindal, didn’t work.

Seriously, they must be screaming over at DU and Kos. Don’t those ignorant rednecks know it was Bush and Republicans that kept aid from them in Katrina, not the Demos? /sarc.

A “nonwhite” doesn’t seem to be the issue. Electing a republican governor in LA is unusual. I found only two republican governors since the 1870’s.

His first act as governor has to be getting rid of that John Edwards hairstyle.

Who cares about his skin color? Other than the Clintoon News Network?

Not nearly as many Americans as there were when I was growing up in the 1940s and '50s thank God. The MSM only cares when they can use race baiting to goad minorities into voting against Republicans, and to accuse conservatives of being racists.

Skin pigmentation does not always define a person's racial background, and it doesn't matter anyway except for the much higher vulnerability of white skin to skin cancer. Skin color is most certainly not an indicator of the character or moral integrity of an individual of any race or skin color. I would be quite happy for Mr. Jindall to represent me in Congress or in the Governor's mansion if I lived in LA, something I definitely can't say for millions of lily white Caucasian liberals.

This is good news. We should savor it, because unless the recruitment arm of the Republican National Committee gets off its posterior, we're going to get creamed in the House and Senate. It's not too late, but it's rapidly getting there.

In OH, we have THREE House seats where Republican incombents are retiring or not running, not counting Jean Schmidt's seat that she held by a toenail despite being in an overwhelmingly red district.

The big question now is: Is he now, or has he ever been, a Muslim? (:

No. He was Hindu and converted to Catholicism.

Jindal and Alaska’s Governor are rising stars in the Republican Party. I can easily see a Palin/Jindal ticket in 2016.

I haven’t followed this election and when I saw the headline I thought it was our favorite chocolate city mayor.

Not quite. Indians are a mixture of many races/ethnic groups, depending on what part of the country you are in.

Besides, the only true caucasians are Armenians and Georgians.

A few points:

1) His skin color is a big deal because he lost because of it last time which led us to the disasterous Blank-o administration.

2) The rest of the country can’t have Jindal until 2016. We’ve got a ton of work to do here and he is going to need 8 years to clean it up.

3) Republicans now hold 4 of 6 top state offices with one dumbocrat incumbent in a runoff. Odon for Ag Comissioner, (based on last night’s results, he most certainly lose) and Foti is gone as AG. There’s a Dem and Rep in the runoff for that job. And even the Dem would be a substantial improvement over that old coot Foti.

Congratulations, Bobby! And good job, Louisiana!

Now...let’s see if we can do something about Corporal 8-Ball down in New Orleans.
