I spent about five minutes in his courtroom and watched him mostly playing with his lip with his finger. It was strange.

Judges can be quite strange. However, they believe they have special dispensation from following the rules that the rest of us must follow. They do not believe they can be biased because, well, they're the judge. It is virtually impossible to get a judge to voluntarily admit that they were wrong.
