Some of my earliest memories from the late 70’s were film strips at school showing cartoons of how the metric system was going to take over for good.
I recall sitting in a classroom and having a teacher try to teach us how far a kilometer was. In retrospect she clearly had no idea, but that didnt stop her from trying. She asked the class to tell tell her something that was a kilometer away from the school and she insisted that a kilometer was waaaaaay far away. Many many miles. Not surprising we didn't get good at it.
My daughter was in Jr. High in the late 90’s.
One of her class projects was called ‘Metric is Magic’.
Her class translated recipes from traditional to metric.
It came out something like..
252 ml of oil
357 ml of water
17 cc of salt
and so on.
I just smiled and kept my mouth shut. :^)
