Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 20 August 2007 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 08/20/2007 8:12:21 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is steaming toward the Yucatan Peninsula today, packing winds over 150 mph. The Hurricane Hunter aircraft aborted its mission Monday morning due to equipment problems. The storm is expected to attain catastrophic Category 5 status today. The Cayman Islands have been spared the brunt of the storm's winds as Dean passed 125 miles south of Grand Cayman.

Jamaica continues to assess damage to its infrastructure after Dean uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, stripped off roofs, and dumped up to 20 inches of rain, causing mudslides in the mountains. The government of Jamaica has declared a month-long state of emergency. Haiti has reported four fatalities. The Dominican Republic reported a 20ft storm surge. Martinique lost its banana crops. Additional details are scarce at this point due to extensive power outages.

Alcoa suspended aluminum production in Jamaica. Mexico evacuated thousands of workers from oil platforms. Texas mobilized the National Guard, opened emergency operations centers and moved inmates inland from three prisons in advance of the storm.

Space shuttle Endeavour is returning home Tuesday, a day early due to Hurricane Dean.

In other storm news, the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin caused massive rains and flooding in Oklahoma Sunday. Two people have drowned, and three are reported missing at this time.

Yes, Josh... flew into Cancun this weekend and headed down to Chetumal today. Not sure if he’s been posting about his travels elsewhere, but we have a 600 post thread about it now:

As close as it gets without being there. Unless they hustle the next plane up, I think this was the last run before landfall.

On its current track and speed, the eye should make landfall 30 miles east of Chetumal about 5 am EDT.

What got my attention, was when Shep said "gusts up to 190 mph". He's been known to exaggerate, and I truly hope this is one of those times.

Be very nervous. If my read of Google Earth is right, Chetumal will be in the southern half of the eye about 6:30 tomorrow morning.

Oh, I’m sorry - my bad. I’m Storm2K, but I do read at EasternUS. My profound apologies - didn’t remember where I had seen it - and I hadn’t seen his posts in a couple of days. He hadn’t left for Chetumal yet when I last read. So sorry for my mistake.

It's only a slight exaggeration. While the NHC does not publicize gusts, Weather Underground has them at 185 mph.

The scary thing is I don't see anything other than an ERC that would weaken Dean at all before the Yucatan landfall, and that hope appears to have been dashed.

We are having a Q&A on Dean on our local TV news for an hour right now, with Max Mayfield, the consultant. (Different station from Doc Frank.)

And yea! Mayfield also thinks Dean will go to MonkeyLand, just north of Chetumal. The NBC Natl News tonight also said “north” of Chetumal. Hope we’re ALL correct!

No worries. He’s been anxious to chase after last yr, so was contemplating going to Jamaica/Yucatan/S. Tx for this one. As it appeared more and more likely the Yucatan would be hit he made the choice to fly there... I guess he was not content to get TS or low hurricane force winds near Cancun so he managed to make his way S towards the hot spot. Earlier tracks were bringing it a bit further north of him though, so this is a bit of a worry.

1 mph at this stage is still worth an hour, so I’ll blame that when I’m wrong ;-)
