Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 20 August 2007 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 08/20/2007 8:12:21 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is steaming toward the Yucatan Peninsula today, packing winds over 150 mph. The Hurricane Hunter aircraft aborted its mission Monday morning due to equipment problems. The storm is expected to attain catastrophic Category 5 status today. The Cayman Islands have been spared the brunt of the storm's winds as Dean passed 125 miles south of Grand Cayman.

Jamaica continues to assess damage to its infrastructure after Dean uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, stripped off roofs, and dumped up to 20 inches of rain, causing mudslides in the mountains. The government of Jamaica has declared a month-long state of emergency. Haiti has reported four fatalities. The Dominican Republic reported a 20ft storm surge. Martinique lost its banana crops. Additional details are scarce at this point due to extensive power outages.

Alcoa suspended aluminum production in Jamaica. Mexico evacuated thousands of workers from oil platforms. Texas mobilized the National Guard, opened emergency operations centers and moved inmates inland from three prisons in advance of the storm.

Space shuttle Endeavour is returning home Tuesday, a day early due to Hurricane Dean.

In other storm news, the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin caused massive rains and flooding in Oklahoma Sunday. Two people have drowned, and three are reported missing at this time.

The 5PM discussion indicates they have all sorts of mixed/conflicting data. Rather unusual.

Can't remember if this was posted before, but YouTube has the "Holy Smokes" video of the Shuttle/ISS astronauts coming up on Dean.

Dunno about NN, but I can only handle one tropical storm at a time.

You need throwaway e-mail addresses for times like those.

Local Hou news: Chetumal is shutting everything down by 7PM, including power. Police going door-to-door to make everyone leave.

Now everyone is going north to Cancun! I hope this means Ambergris Caye and that area of Belize will miss the head-on hit. The info has been back and forth since I’ve been back online.

I remember Wilma (and Emily - and back to Keith, I think it was) and how the poor people of Orange Walk, in Belize, back from the coast, suffered so terribly. Also remember the boat that went down in a hideyhole, losing many onboard.

Prayers continue for the Costa Maya and Belize.

Please pray for our Missionaries in Punta Gorda,Belize. This will be the second hurricane they will have endured, but this one will be ALOT worse that the 1st.
Pray for all in the area that GOD will provide shelter, comfort and relief during this terrible time of trouble!

I have provided a link for those who would like to offer personal prayers and support. Sorry, I don’t know how to post the link.

Please pray for our Missionaries in Punta Gorda,Belize.

Punta Gorda is well south in Belize. They will be on the weaker side of the storm (you don't want to be just north of the eye at landfall), and, if the track holds, will probably experience at the worst Cat1 or low-end Cat 2 intensity. So hopefully they won't get it too bad.

I’m with you. These folks are inspiring. I am completely in awe of there courage, ingenuity, and perseverance. It is a shame every time we intercept and repatriate them to a almost certain death. I hate to admit it, but these are folks that I would aid to get in. Mexico isn’t a tyrrany.

I actually prefer this satellite image:

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/browsh3.html

The larger scales make it easier to try to forecast...

Sure looks like this one’s going to Mexico.... And, it should be plenty strong when it arrives. Nice outflows, and very warm water.... not a good sign for the Mexicans..
