LOL! I alwasy wondered why we had to duck and cover under our desks because the classroom had a bank of windows that would have sliced all of us anyway.
My only thought was that it gave you something to do so you didn’t have a chance to see it coming anyway.
Those old wooden school desks were secretly developed in conjunction with the Manhattan Project. They were impervious to the heat, radiation, and impulse of a nuclear blast.
Or maybe it was just to put wood over top of you so you would start burning faster. One of the two.
