Senator In Scandal Won't Resign Republican Acknowledged Connection To 'D.C. Madam'

POSTED: 1:38 pm EDT July 16, 2007 UPDATED: 6:16 pm EDT July 16, 2007 NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana U.S. Sen. David Vitter, who last week admitted to a connection with the so-called D.C. Madam, said Monday he will not resign.

Vitter said he was in seclusion because he wanted time alone with his family and for prayer.

"I'm so very, very sorry" to all those let down by the revelations, Vitter said.

"I will work every day to rebuild this trust," he said.

Vitter, who is Catholic, said he confessed about his indescretions a number of years ago.

"I believe I received forgiveness from God. I know I did from Wendy," he said of his wife, Wendy Vitter.

Vitter is a conservative who ran for office on a platform opposing abortion and supporting a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. He replaced former Democratic Rep. Bob Livingston, who resigned after rumors of numerous affairs.

Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt played a role in exposing both men's activities.

"I think Livingston’s stepping down makes a very powerful argument that (former President Bill) Clinton should resign as well and move beyond this mess,” he said.

Flynt said last week that his magazine was the first to link Vitter to an escort service operated by Deborah Jeane Palfrey. She is accused of running an escort service in Washington, D.C., a charge she denies.

Vitter acknowledged last Monday that his telephone number appeared among others in Palfrey's records.

He made the admission to The Associated Press in a statement. Flynt said Vitter went to the AP only after one of his reporters contacted Vitter to confirm the connection to Palfrey.

I hope he doesn’t resign! He has asked forgiveness of the ones who truly matter, and received it. He can try to run for re-election, and then we’ll see if it matters a hill of beans to the voters of LA. Somehow I doubt it, considering how corrupt the politics of LA has been for years. His indescretions look like small potatoes in comparison.

Do we think Flynt will out any with a ‘D’ by their names?

Only if they are pro-life conservatives, which means, not ruddy likely.

Teddy Kennedy has still not been prosecuted for vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. As long as that pig sits in the Senate, the Democrats can just shut the hell up

Well, said!

He’s a Republican so the left will never stop jumping up and down and shouting in hypocritical outrage.

2.

i agree. jefferson survived the 2006 elections unscathed.

this makes me resentful of the democrats = the evil party,

and the republicans = the stupid party.

i’m tired of voting for a party that won’t even stand up for itself.

“I have hopes that conservatives can help Louisiana rise again...” Thank you! We’re trying! I’m praying that Vitter doesn’t fold and resign.

You certainly speak the truth, a truth that has been repeatedly ignored by MSM.

I hope he is all right. He was one of the five main patriots who stood up for our country during the shamnesty hearings. He was eloquent and well-spoken, and one of the few to represent the commoners.

If God and his wife have forgiven him, he needs to hang in there and not resign and do his job.

Hopefully, when he comes up for reelection, the people of Louisiana will be forgiving as well.

This is old news now; time to move on.

he entered a plea of guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended.

In other words, he was NEVER punished, legally, for contributing to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. We can thank her, though, for the fact that his actions meant he would NEVER be President.

Holy over reaction batman, maybe jefferson should resign first

Heck, what THOMAS Jefferson did was a lot worse than what Vitter did, and he is held in high regard by all.

1. I couldn’t care less about a politician engaging in a victimless “crime”.

2. Unless that politician runs around thumping the podium about putting other people in jail for victimless crimes.

3. Of course, reagardless, it reflects poorly on his character that he did this while married.

Yes, and if I were him, I’d hang onto the Senate seat even if God and my wife didn’t forgive. God is not registered to vote, and the wife is just one vote.

that his wife really is willing to let him stay in the Senate and not denounce him,

This is wrong on a couple of levels.

"Stand by Your Man" syndrome- especially if he's a pork toten' US Senator [Katrina=$$$]. Certainly a prostitute exists that would gladly play the role of "wifey" to a guy that can deliver the perks and lifestyle of a Senator.

Whatever he paid the 'escort' was cheap by comparison (though his reputation is mud). The dems will have a field-day with this guy's family values.
