Thank you for these most interesting links and this particular story.

Sorry, can't answer your question.
Take my word for it. I know Gallina culture artifact materials and I’ve done extensive work in just this area of NM. We located so many of the Gallina pit houses on one proposed seismic easement (1989) that it took all day just to cover 1/4 mile, just for the time needed to record them.
BUMP
Researchers aren’t really divided. There are two opinions, however; one opinion comes from archaeologists whom are hired by the indians and the other is from other archaeologists. Indians purportedly descended from those groups where cannibalism was practiced are understandably sensitive about the idea.
I wish I had the text at hand, but Dr. Tim White did a brilliant study of the subject ca 1990. His conclusions were derived from data that looked about as ironclad as possible that prehistoric cannibalism in that area of NM did occur. Dr. White’s book makes fascinating reading and it’s not so doused in archy lingo that most people couldn’t understand it. I believe it is entitled “Prehistoric Cannibalism...”. You can probably get a copy through one of the internet suppliers.
Many times photos reveal so much of the surrounding terrain that a little research could locate the area for plunderers. The area where most of the Gallina pithouses is located, or at least where they are most densely distributed, is mostly privately-owned. The ranchers who own that land protect their land and the sites much better than the feds do; consequently, some of the sites are in pristine condition.
Don’t pay much attention to what the fed. rangers and interpreters say about those sites, Chaco included. Many times they will color their presentations with a huge load of feel-good or gobal warming BS. You probably won’t have the time, but the best bet is to get a PRIVATE archaeologist,as opposed to fed. archaeologist, to show the sites to you. There are lots of archaeologists in NM, and a few of them are very good. Many times they will be touring the sites themselves and you can learn a lot from them. Most never get tired of visiting Chaco. Have a great trip to my home (but ultra liberal) state!
Christy Turner is a good source.

Ahhh...good point.
Wasn’t it the Maya who did something like cradle-boarding to babies to give them the fashionalbe ‘flat-top’ look.
***When are you going to be back on days? I have the photo album from my trip...***
On day shift 18-20 and 28-31 this month.
I suppose you might be one of those conservatives that wonders why 90% of Indian tribes all vote for the Democrats. (including my tribe)
Nope, 344 is the road that goes north from the intersection of old 66 in Edgewood, and it curves around South Mtn and heads west, intersecting N-14 about two thirds of the way to Madrid.
Perhaps we’re both confused!
Uh ... it would appear that in THIS particular case, if anyone "massacred thousands upon thousands of natives," it was OTHER NATIVES! And if you're sick of "this same BS," I'm just as sick of seeing my ancestors painted as heartless, barbaric hegemonists just because they conquered a land populated by breechcloth-wearing grub-eaters. There is much to be appreciated from Indian culture. But the post-modern lie that it was serene, blissful, and ultimately edenic is offensive and hypocritical.

No, I KNOW why 90% of Indian tribes vote Democrat: dependence. The bleeding hearts give them enough money to stay drunk, in return for their votes. Nothing complicated there.
And before you get to yammering too much, I grew up in the heart of Indian country. I'm within a day's drive of the largest reservation in the country, and I've seen the crushing poverty there. It exists for the same reason as poverty in the inner city: misguided hand-wringers have erased the self-worth of generations by providing endless welfare programs and assuming the guilt for the demise of a culture that could not survive its encounter with modernity.
YEP...I posted the pic. I know where yer speaking of now....the road I am speaking of is just south of Madrid on old 14 North going east towards 344.....
