SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) -- A 25-year-old man was executed by lethal injection Wednesday for the torture and slaying of a teenager who was forced to drink hydrochloric acid during a robbery of his home. It was the state's first execution in 60 years Elijah Page gave up his appeals and asked to die for the 2000 murder of Chester Allan Poage, 19, who was also stabbed, kicked and bashed with large rocks in a torture session that lasted two to three hours.

Page, of Athens, Texas, died at 10:11 p.m. from a lethal injection administered at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

He had no last words, warden Doug Weber said.

Gov. Mike Rounds postponed Page's execution last year over concerns that a 1984 state law requiring the use of a two-drug mixture could put prison officials at legal risk if they instead administered a three-drug combination that is now the standard..

There are a whole bunch more on death row living off the taxpayers like welfare bums for 20 years or more.

Get on with the executions. Now!

I think it should be noted that South Dakota has a very low murder rate, so its first execution in 60 years may be more than just liberal pro-criminal statutes...I am sure they have had few first-degree murder cases....at least compared to most American cities

Pretty good!! The crime takes places in 2007 and the death penalty is carried 7 years later. Usually these mutts linger at taxpayer expense for 15 or more years. The death penalty IS a deterrent...this creep will never murder again.

I think it should be noted that South Dakota has a very low murder rate, so its first execution in 60 years may be more than just liberal pro-criminal statutes.

In 2006, 53 inmates were executed, 7 fewer than in 2005.

* In 2006, 53 persons in 14 States were executed -- 24 in Texas; 5 in Ohio; 4 each in Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Virginia; and 1 each in Indiana, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, California, Montana, and Nevada.

* Of persons executed in 2006: -- 32 were white -- 21 were black * All 53 inmates executed in 2006 were men. * Lethal injection accounted for 52 of the executions and electrocution for one.

* Thirty-eight States and the Federal government in 2005 had capital statutes.

Prisoners under sentence of death The number of prisoners under sentence of death decreased for the fifth consecutive year in 2005. Prisoners on death row, 1953-2005

* At year end 2005, 36 States and the Federal prison system held 3,254 prisoners under sentence of death, 66 fewer than at year end 2004

... and in my own state ... Arizona! Maricopa County is Becoming the Death Penalty Capital of America As of April, 2007, Maricopa County currently has in excess of 140 individuals facing the death penalty - it appears that that is more, per capita, than any other County, not just in Arizona, but in the United States

... and I say BLOODY GOOD! Be done with any mad dogs who prey on society ... keeping them around for years, feeding them and seeing to all their medical needs .... fuhgedaboutit!!

I agree that more murderers should be executed. I heard Rush Limbaugh say that maybe capital punishment doesn’t deter crime because it’s not used often enough. Rush said that about 18,000 murders occur in the U.S. each year. If all of the killers were executed, that would be 49 executions each day. If newspapers printed the names of everyone who was executed the previous day, criminals would see what would happen to them, if they murder.
