Rollout of the 787 on 7-8-07, which is set for 3:30 p.m. PT. (Hoo-ah!)

The use of fatigue-resistant and rust-free composite materials means air in the cabin can be more humid, leaving passengers less dried out and jetlagged after a long flight.
That'll be nice. As it is I practically have to travel with an IV drip bag to stay hydrated. I look forward to the day when you can travel in the comfort and safety of a fluid-filled sack like if you were still in the womb. Of course, our airports would get rather messy what with all those business travelers and tourists bursting into their terminals through what amount to birth canals. Yuck.

The jet will not look radically new on the outside, but beneath the just-dried paint lies a structure 50 percent made up of carbon composite materials and another 15 percent titanium, making the plane much lighter and fuel efficient than existing jetliners of the same size. Great! We can all look forward to lower ticket prices for the 787, right?

Lower than they would have been without the composites. I don't have a link to Ralph Nader's Anti-Capitalist web site but a quick Google should find it.

We can thank Rutan and some of the other kit plane companies.
If it wasn’t for them and their light fast designes we would still be dealing with aluminum and rivit brains.

Probably not, but it will be a much more enjoyable ride.

Seattle Seahawks ‘Roll Out’ Red Carpet for 787 at Qwest Field. The first 25,000 guests will receive a 787 glider as a souvenir.
Dang, if I would’ve known! ;-)

It was not Rutan. Actually the composite technology was developed by Boeing when they built the composite wings and other parts for the B-2 bomber program that my stepdad was in charge of at Boeing’s Seattle plant.

Boeing has webcasts and satellite channels but no cable tv channels?

if the fluids contained some part of the pig, then we can get rid of airport security too..i’m all for that.

I’m just guessing that dealing with a satellite provider is more easy than dealing with several different cable operators who can be stingy at times.

Actually, we should thank Lockheed and McDonnell-Douglas more than Burt Rutan for making composite airplanes possible for commercial airliners. Boeing just borrowed a lot of the research done on composite structures used on military aircraft and applied it to the 787. (The F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F-18 Hornet were among the first aircraft to use composites in a number of critical components to keep weight down.)
