House Democrats say they may break the immigration issue up into a series of smaller bills that would put off the tougher parts and allow others to pass, such as border security, and high-tech and agriculture worker programs that have clear support.
That could buy Democrats more time to work out the tougher aspects of immigration, such as what to do about the estimated 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens now here, but it would go against the Senate's massive catchall approach and contradicts President Bush's call for a broad bill to pass.
"There is active, serious discussion in that regard," said Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, Florida Democrat, who said Democratic leaders tossed the idea around at a recent meeting. "The idea is out there, and there is listening going on by the leadership in regards to immigration on trying to come up with something that is doable, sensible and plausible to the American people."
Both Democrats and Republicans in the House say no decisions have been made and both sides are waiting to see what happens in the Senate's off-again-on-again immigration debate.
In the Senate, Democrats took the first step to revive the debate yesterday, introducing a new bill that compiles all of the Senate's action over the past few weeks. The move is designed to overcome some of the procedural hurdles opponents are expected to erect.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, says he is committed to getting a "comprehensive" bill done before releasing the Senate for its Fourth of July vacation, and he has the support of top Republican leaders.
In the House, though, Republicans are more uniformly opposed, and many vulnerable freshman Democrats could be hurt by a bill labeled "amnesty."

Yes they do,PULL!
Parts of the bill should pass. The problem was that the bill as a whole wanted us to legitimize the earlier frauds against us in exchange for a promise not to commit any more.
Actually this is good news, because in order for a bill to get to the President for his signature, the House and Senate bills must have been passed in identical form. I think this makes getting an agreement even harder.
“such as what to do about the estimated 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens now here”
Apparently they do. Here’s a solution: Arrest and Deport. And build a massive wall on the border with barbed-wire and landmines included. I don’t see what people don’t understand about that concept.
No matter how you slice it, it’s still amnesty.
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

Here we see the new strategy: Firstly: get the house to pass a bill with huge support, such as a border security only bill. Secondly: go to conference with the senate, where all the bad stuff can be added back in. Lastly: ram the amended bad bill thru both chambers quickly.
Do we really trust these guys to allow them to do that? No
No amnesty period. Build the entire fence and deport the illegals. It’s that simple. No more of this gobbly goop sap they are trying to sneak through.
Part 1 = Delay any additional legislation until border is secured, and illegals caught breaking the law are actually deported and stay deported. Employers knowingly hiring illegals are treated as criminals themselves.
Ah! That’s a great bill. That’s what they’re debating, right? Right?!
Sorry... for a second there I was in a little dreamland. :/
>>They think we’re idiots, don’t they?<<
Maybe I’m being stupid but help me out, if you would...
If they will separate the bill and let the security parts pass, why isn’t that a good thing? We can get the good stuff and still fight the bad. There are actually good parts to the bill but they just aren’t nearly worth amnesty for 12 million law breakers.
Am I missing something?
FR will totally swallow the Dem and media strategy causing media ratings to rise.

Man alive, you are utterly and completely paranoid. I like it! I agree.
A target is and has been all along the Republican Party as the base of the Republican Party are the most dangerous to the idealogical goals of the Globalist leadership at the reins of both parties.
Yes, they do think we’re idiots. Say they pass some enforcement measures. Why are we supposed to believe they will actually be enforced, any more than the enforcement measures that are still on the books? This is another way they think they can cover their butts,, and the dumb voters will applaud them. Congress needs to take a time out and pressure the administration to enforce the current laws for a couple of years, the administration needs to actually enforce the current laws for a couple of years, and then we’ll talk. Right now they have no credibility.

Ain't gonna happen. A lot of the freshmen Dems ran to the right of the pubbie on how to deal with illegal immigration. And everyone is up for re-election next year. Some Senators, IMO, figure the voters will forget by 2010 or 2012.
It's bad news when the House Dems are making more sense than Bush or Trent Lott on a major issue.
