Saudis 'hold 170 terror suspects'
BBC News ^ | 4-27-2007 | BBC News

More than 170 terror suspects have been arrested in Saudi Arabia, officials there have said.

Those detained are said to be both Saudi and foreign nationals, Interior Ministry spokesman Gen Mansur al-Turki told local media.

Large amounts of weapons and $5.33m (£2.67m) in cash were also seized.

Some of the suspects were training as pilots and planning attacks on oil installations and military bases, according to the interior ministry.

"Some have begun training on the use of weapons, and some were sent to other countries to study aviation in preparation to use them to carry out terrorist operations inside the kingdom," a ministry statement read out on state TV channel al-Ekhbariya said.

The station broadcast footage of various types of weapons which were said to have been buried in the desert.

Saudi Arabia has been battling al-Qaeda-linked militants since a 2003 wave of suicide attacks on foreigners.

I don’t like how he bashes the Bush Administration but he does make some very valid points regarding fighting terrorism. I think I just might buy his book.

Why would anyone, in any country, let a Muslim near a commercial aircraft cockpit?

“I agree.

I wish this nation would tackle ENERGY with Manhattan Project like zeal.

We’re so financially tied to these loons and their damn oil.”

Yep. It should be treated as a National Security Priority.

The Saudis are the ones that bankroll Wahabbism, the core philosophy of Islamists.

Star there.

There are four (actually six) kind of Saudis.

1. The Royal House of Saud. The Saudi Princes are our “friends”. This means this degenerate, incestous breed are selling us their oil, they were/are more or less hostile to Saddam and the Iranian regime, and they are SLIGHTLY better than the Al-Qaeda alternative. They are not allies, but our dangerous muppets. We want them to stay because the current alternatives are worse.

2. The majority Wahhabi-Sunni Saudi people ( base for Al-Qaeda). They are the probably most dangerous medieval and backward people in the entire Middle East. We don’t want them to come to power. They are largely inbred nuts and would make Bin-Laden their Overlord. We prefer to keep the Royals in place.

3. The Shia Saudis. They sit on the oil. They would make useful allies to us... but also to Iran. It’s unfortunately Iran they feel attracted to. Nontheless... if we would split up Saudi-Arabia, the Shias would prevent the oil getting into the hands of the Wahhabi-Al-Qaeda scum.

4.The tiny Saudi middle/upper class. There are a couple of reasonable, secular Saudis with ties and sympathies to the USA. It would be great if they would get the power. But they are far too few and too weak.

5. The last group in Saudi-Arabia is an Army of South-Asian (slave) workers. They keep the country running. The Saudis look down on them. But each of them is more useful than 1000 Saudis.

As I noted on another thread, boy, the Saudis are clueless. Don’t they know that the war on terror needs to be fought in Afghanistan against Osama bin Laden./stupid Democrat mode

Just with themselves, is basically the correct answer.
The rulers of the family saud are in something of a bind, how to remain in power (appeasing the Wahabist), keeping good relations with America (not letting out that they are one of the most repressive nations today), and figuring out what to do about all the young unemployed Saudis.

The term, between a rock and a hard place comes to mind.

I can’t believe they took them alive.

What's happening to them right this very minute makes waterboarding look like a trip to Disney World. They'd be lucky to have panties draped over their heads.

I'm betting they all spill their guts before the Saudi intelligence service disembowels them.

They walk a fine line between being our enemy and wanting our money. Usually they kill the terrorists in a firefight, I speculate that they do so because there are so many high up officials involved in it that they don’t want them alive to incriminate anyone high up.

Thanks.

I’m American, but I lived and worked in Iran for some time(late 1970’s, before the Islamic Revolution) and a short time in the Arab Emirates.

My wife is of Iranian origin (but Christian), and coupled with my interest in politics and history, I learned a lot about the Middle East.

I can’t believe they took them alive.

Taking them alive, to extract information, is probably the logical reason for doing so. A second reason may be that some are actually Saudi's and will receive a different treatment then those of foreign extraction.

The Saudi's have methods that will ensure that information is attained.

AP reports:

The militants also planned to storm Saudi prisons to free the inmates, the statement said. More than $32.4 million was seized in the operation, one of the largest sweeps against terror cells in the kingdoms.

Money Money Money....
