Progress in Iraq’s Anbar “breathtaking”: US general

The US commander of multinational forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus, said Wednesday that efforts to quell unrest in the western Sunni province of Anbar have made almost “breathtaking” progress.

Speaking to reporters about the new US strategy to curb sectarian violence in Iraq launched two months ago, based on a US troop increase, Petraeus said: “We are ahead, I think, with respect ... to the reduction of sectarian murders in Baghdad.

“Progress in Anbar is almost something that’s breathtaking,” he added.

The general illustrated his positive evaluation by citing the killing Friday of an Al Qaeda kingpin, identified by the US command as the “security emir” for the east of Anbar province.

Emergency Response Units, paramilitary organizations loyal to Sheikh Sattar al-Rishawi, prepare their weapons before a patrol in Ramadi, Iraq on Tuesday, March 20, 2007. Ramadi in the past was virtually run by insurgents led by al-Qaeda who carried out daily attacks and kept the police off the streets. But, these elite fighters many of which admit they were members of the old Iraqi Army and Saddam's Elite Republican Guard managed to help break al-Qaeda's grip on the city.

So true. The good news is that while there will be setbacks, progress is being made and the main of Iraq is growing stronger. That former “insurgents” are taking on the true foreign invaders, al Qaeda, is such a good development. Thank goodness that there’s still enough time left in Bush’s term to pierce the mainstream media lies so that the truth will out...

Well. Isn’t it amazing how quickly things turn when you kill your enemy without apology . Nice change from four years of bringum to jusstis. The people in Iraq have to want a form of democracy , i don’t see the desire. This so called surge should have happened long ago . It looks like the dems and some repubs will make sure success is out of the question.

This will have to be spiked so the Brian Williams can explain how, adjusted for inflation, the DOW was actually higher in 1930.

So, how will Reid, Pelosi et al spin this one? If they take the time to listen to what the General says, that is.

The Anbar Savlation Council has retaken much of Anbar and started widescale conscription in Fallujah in Ramadi. They have gotten the go ahead to attack al-Qaeda elsewhere in Iraq.

By the end of the year the Anbar Salvation Council will be around 200,000 men strong.

It is true. I just searched and found MSNBC and other articles from May and June of 2006. They described Ramadi as the meanest place in Iraq. This is really turning around. My daughter’s boyfriend is in one of the real tough towns in that province. He says it has really done a 180 over the last six to twelve months.

The treasonous actions of the democrats must not go unrewarded. I hope the muslim terrorists mistake the democratic traitors for their enemies someday.

Maybe disbanding those units entirely wasn't such a good idea.

Tens of thousands of young men with military experience with no jobs and barely enough money to feed themselves let alone their families.

Yes, it was a massive mistake.

The vast majority would have been happy for a constant pay check.
