Webb Denies He Gave Aide Gun That Led to Arrest

Tuesday , March 27, 2007

WASHINGTON — Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Tuesday he did not give aide Phillip Thompson the gun that led to his arrest in a Senate office building. Webb did not say whether it was his gun.

Thompson is awaiting arraignment in D.C. Superior Court after being arrested Monday for trying to enter the Russell Senate Office Building, where Webb's office is located, carrying a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines.

The judge will determine whether Thompson, 45, will have to pay bail to get out of jail, and will set a date for a preliminary hearing. Thompson spent the night in a D.C. jail after U.S. Capitol Police determined Monday that he did not have a permit to carry a gun in Washington, D.C., where only law enforcement officials are allowed to carry handguns.

He is charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. According to the court docket, Monday was Thompson's birthday.

A senior Democratic aide said Monday evening that Thompson forgot that he had the weapon when he sent the senator's bag through the X-ray machine at the office building. The aide said Webb gave the bag that contained the gun to Thompson when the aide drove the senator to the airport.

Webb said he has been in New Orleans since Friday and returned Monday night. He denied that he gave the weapon to Thompson.

50 caliber weapons were exceedingly common in the days of the Founders.

Also, regarding WMD, it was common to toss dead goats and cows over castle walls to poison the wells with anthrax.

WMD has been with us for a long time.

Well planned fires did their darndest too.

I somehow doubt that a woman would carry a weapon in a purse that was so heavy that a child could not point it briefly, "just to test it."

If it was that heavy it would not have rested unrecognized in her purse.

I feel pretty bad for that aide right about now. His backside is really hanging out in the wind,

That happens when you go to work for a mentally deranged nutcase. I have to assume the aide knew what kind of creep he was sucking up to, so I don't feel bad for him at all. They probably deserve each other, like Billyboy and his sacrifical lambs. You pays your money and takes your chances.

I must say, a lot of people are wasting an opportunity to figure out what's really going on with Webb. Since I think the guy is clinically insane, I am QUITE concerned that he is roaming around with a weapon at the Capitol and if I read this correctly he was in New Orleans with it, too.

Like, does he plan on taking a gun the next time he confronts the President? Remember his LAST incident hinted that he would have preferred to do violence to the President.

Sorry, but it's one thing if Chuck Grassle has a gun; quite another when Wbb the Psycho does.

Regardless of party this very well could be an honest mistake

If you were approaching a metal detector with a bag with a loaded gun and two extra loaded magazines, you think it just might slip your mind? Second Amendment issues aside, this is a highly suspicious and peculiar event which will no doubt be frantically covered up.

I just saw Webb on TV, too. What a change in his demeanor there, as compared to his response to the State of the Union address. He's worried. He should be ashamed of himself and embarrassed about his aide having to spend the night in a DC jail.

Good point ~ still, the aide could be up to no-good here so he's going to have to go to trial.

Remember the "macaca" guy? He had a peculiar haircut ~ kind of a modified Mohawk. A few weeks after the "macaca" incident another guy up in Montreal with the same sort of haircut decided to shoot up a bunch of students.

This could be what it seems to be ~ a brownshirt operation of the worst sort.

Cheney should take advantage of all the Secret Service protection he can get when he appears on the Senate floor.

Webb said he was in New Orleans Fri thru Sun night, but WHY does he say that? What does THAT have to do with the story? hmmmmmm

Fwiw, Lee Harvey Oswald spent some time in New Orleans. Not that it means anything, I'm just saying. ;)

Sell is commercial conduct not free speech and regulated by state law retained by the states and not granted to the federal government.
Fornication is shown on the airways every minute of the day. Check your cable, dish, direct tv.
Treason is set out in Article III section 3 of the Constitution .It is separate and distinct from the 1st amendment and apparently not applicable to the new york times and their sources.

Advertising products is commerical and there are state laws against fraud as well as other crimes.

The states have slander and libel laws and they never gave up that right to the federal government. Certainly those are civil issues and handled privately not by the state criminal codes.

There are no limits on freedom of religion set out in the constitution. As you say, there have been state criminal laws set in place that do punish those who otherwise might find them part of their ritual.

The IV amendment to the constitution governs search and arrests. "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, paper, and effects shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported bu oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." It more than a mere process it is a basic guarantee, while sadly weakened by supreme court rulings, of freedom that the people never granted to the federal or state governments.

The 5th amendment regarding testimony against oneself applies to any proceeding civil and criminal, trial or investigation, and congressional hearings. In OJ's case he had already been found not guilty on the criminal charges which is the difference. Else wise all criminal proceedings would first start with a simple civil lawsuit and civil discovery rules.

< Lived 90 miles from OKC at the time and it was horrific. OK has a small enough population that all of us had some connection to people killed and injured. Do you suppose McVey gave any consideration to the murdered or that he would follow a fertilizer law? Your posisitioon is Gorelike in that you are presupposing that the right to carry will create a proliferation of WMD's. I have not ever read where a licensed or permit holder has done that.

And criminal laws will keep the bad guys from having guns and these other nasty weapons?.
Did the person who shot president Reagan have a permit to carry a gun. Did the laws against having a gun protect the president?
The way the world is is just the reason to not limit the right to bear arms.
Where do you find the right to fight against tyranny is a collective right.
Individual and even collective actions against the government is called treason unless it prospers.
No Guns in courts worked well for those in that courtroom in Atlanta.
Rights are inalienable and not granted to either the states or the federal government except as specifically enumerated in the constitution>
T he most worrisome thing is to expect that citizens will somehow be more abusive with weapons than are the thugs, terrorists, gangs, etc who have no concern for the law or your rights.
Convicted felons lose quite a number of their rights including the right to vote but will these felons respect the law.

We are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable Rights; every time we the people consent to the government impinging on these rights is a loss of liberty.

Putting the guy in jail for a night is pretty severe.

I disagree. It is illegal to carry a firearm into the Congress - as it should be - and he was arrested and not afforded special treatment which is proper. Having said that I don't know why he wasn't able to post bail and get out.

The bag containing the pistol was in Thompson's possession when he was entering the office bldg. Thompson is not a member of congress, so he doesn't enjoy the same perks as our elite rulers do.

He was thrown under the bus.

I missed the part of the article where he took the gun to New Orleans!! HOW would he get that on a commercial plane?? Oh, I forgot, Democrats don't fly commercial....they go on private planes.

Also, it's one thing to have a loaded gun, it's quite another to carry CLIPS with you!!
