Republicans urge Bush to avoid fight with Congress

Key Senate Republicans on Sunday urged President George W. Bush to compromise with Congress over White House aides' testimony as support for U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales eroded further.

Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Gonzales would have to step down if he did not tell the truth when he told Congress that he was not involved in discussions about a group of fired U.S. prosecutors at the center of the Washington controversy.

Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican and possible presidential candidate, told ABC's "This Week" that Gonzales lost credibility and Bush should "fix the problem" and avoid a court fight with Congress.

"I want them in the open, under oath, publicly, where both Republican senators and Democratic senators can ask questions," Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy of Vermont told CBS's "Face the Nation."

Specter said Bush should avoid a court fight and compromise with lawmakers.

"This matter is so important to the day-in and day-out functioning of the Department of Justice that the air has to be cleared," Specter said. "I think the president is wrong when he refuses to have a transcript."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, agreed.

I agree. I really would like to know if there is a way to recall congresssional members. I think it would be possible to do this with some of these people.

Do you really think that is what he said?

I don't know. I downloaded the hearing that I think the media is talking about but I have not had a chance to listen to it yet.

I think what may be on the table is a valid compromise. The president should not have made his offer so fast. But now that he did, the valid compromise might be

The aides talk to Congress in closed session. There CAN be a transcript, but they will not talk under oath.

That may fly.

Hagel and Specter are each gutless wonders. Problem is that the entire GOP is a bunch of spineless whiners. They don't have the stomach for a fight and that includes Bush. The whole bunch makes me sick.

Exactly...Diane Feinstein said today..it wasn't being under oath that is the most important..it is the transcript.

Why would the transcript be so important if not to try to find a perjury chance???

Bush needs actively campaign against the RINOs.
Why would Bush campaign against himself?

The Bush family has been active in Republican politics since before most Freepers were born. His grandfather, Prescott Bush was in the US Senate as a Republican in 1952. By contrast, Ronald Reagan only joined the Republicans in 1962. While I've disagreed with some of Bush's decisions, I think it's a little absurd to call someone who's been a Republican his entire life, and whose father was a Republican president, and whose grandfather was a Republican senator a RINO.

I supported Pat Toomey for Specters job. Very very close. If we would have had the full support of the GOP, there would have been Sen. Toomey instead of Specter.

Specter is a self serving scottish snake.

I am not wishing for Hillary, Im merely pointing out that settling for second best has brought us these RINOs. If we compromise our prinicples and keep electing folks like these, we will continue to get more of the same. Why do folks like Spectre even stay in the GOP? I remember when Spectre was running against Toomey and we were admonished to support Spectre "because he can win". He has been a shameful disgrace since. Like I said, Im partly to blame for getting caught up in supporting folks I have real issues with "for the good of the party".

The thing is, this is in no way about finding out any facts. It's about getting as many words down on paper that they can that can be taken out of context and twisted into a publicity stunt. It would not be fair to those who are honestly trying to answer the questions to have questioning and a transcript that would only be used for politics and not the truth.

From everything I have read, what Gonzalez said and what the memos said WERE consistent. But it's the only thing the MSM and the Dems have out of all the testimony and memos so far. So, they report it as being inconsitent and everyone believes it.

President Bush is not a RINO.

If you use that term wrongly it becomes meaningless.

Then again, maybe most of what you say is meaningless.........

None of the above are really Republicans so the headline is actually wrong. Real Republicans want him to stand up to those America haters.

President Bush doesn't have that image to anyone who's been watching him, Spirit.

It's only alleged because the people who allege it don't know what they're talking about.....

btw, Hegel and Spectre are hardly people the President will listen to. He's already committed to this fight, and he's a man of his word.

Key Senate Republicans...urged President George W. Bush to compromise...

Ah, yes. Compromise.

Compromising with the Dems has certainly worked up to now, hasn't it?

No, wait, standing up to the Dems has worked (e.g. judge appts). Compromising (e.g. spending) has not worked.

Ergo, our President Dubya must stand up to not only the Dems (whose regard for our fine country is in serious question) - - but now he must stand up to "Key Senate Republicans" (whose ability to sacrifice is nothing (zero) compared to our troops and our President).

Fortunately, I believe that Dubya sees the error of excessive compromise, and he is up to the task to stand up to any senator.

Why are we wasting our time with this Gonzales nonsense, which doesn't really matter? These politicians need to find honest work.
